theatrical version

only watched theatrical version disk. all the special effects in the film were done pre-cgi. it's kind of amazing when considering how little the post-cgi adds to the films in the newer versions & in most cases actually distracts from them. these films are actually more closely related to 'king kong' ('33) than 'avatar'. lucas should have release the theatrical releases in true anamophic (sp?) w/s instead of treating them as undesirable stepchildren. these theatrical versions are revolutionary. to 'gussy them up' with digital cosmetics is basically akin to colorization. hopefully the original release versions will get the blu-ray or future technology release they deserve. people liked these movies as they were. quit messing with them lucas, you ass.Read full review...

Star Wars 2006 SE DVD Movie Review

I'm old enough to have seen all the SW's original movies on the big screen. As George Lucas tinkered with the original versions, most Star Wars fans got very angry. Especially when is was almost impossible to get or see the original versions until 2006. The special editions included the revised version and the original theatrical version on disc 2. But the video and audio quality is not up to today's standards. Lucas considers the revised versions what he intended they should have been all along, but he had to wait for the technology to catch up. Again, Star Wars fans don't agree. But he has the power and we don't. Aside from the narrower letterbox format, barely acceptable video quality and 2 channel stereo audio, it's the only way to view the originals unless you do back to VHS or laserdisc. I'm glad I have these editions. It's great to see the original movies again and really the quality is not bad. I highly recommend getting a copy of all three movies for any avid Star Wars fan. Maybe some day Lucas will wise up and give his fans what they want. It's sure he would be happy to make more money off us as he usually has done over the years with multiple re-releases. May the Force be with us. Read full review...

Return of the Jedi

This is the digitally remastered third movie starring the treo Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Harrison Ford (Han Solo) and Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia). Luke and the Princess set out to rescue Han from Jaba the Hut on a distant planet. Then the team up with some Ewoks to fight the Imperial troops and Darth Vader. Plenty of action in this one; and this is where Luke finds out who his father really was.
Special features include a commentary by George Lucas and others about the making of the film. They discuss some of the technical methods used to provide the visual and audio results we see in this Sci-Fi film. And it also provides additonal insight and explanation of details of the story. It could be a bit much for some, but if you are a real fan of The Star Wars saga, it is of interest.
Disc 2 includes the original 1983 version of Return of the Jedi; so you can compare the new inhanced version with the original. Disc 2 also includes a Lego video game X-Box demo.
There are all kinds of special effects, both audio and visual. Comedy is sprinkled through out, and imaginative creatures everywhere. The acting, especially between Ford, Hamill, and Fisher as they interact,is very good. There seems to be a better chemistry going on with them, this being their third movie working together. There is plenty of action and suspense to entertain just about any member of the family. This compares well with the other Star Wars episodes; they all are individually and collectively very good. Rate PG, primarily for the Sci-Fi violence and one of Carrie Fisher's costumes.
A good family movie.

Bought it for the "Theatrical Release" version.

To be honest I bought this only for the original "Theatrical Release" version, which is on the bonus disk (disk 2). Having the re-done one from the '90s is just a bonus. I have only watched the original from this disk set as I am an "original" fan and that is the one I know and love.

Speaking of loving it, I am biased as a huge Star Wars Nerd and so regardless of any and all writing or other flaws in any of these films I can give it all a pass. What I love is the entire storyline and characters, not to mention the fantastic visuals and sounds that all us fans love. While I love the Star Wars universe on the whole I don't completely love all the films (prequels) but I still found them all entertaining and worth watching at least a couple times. Even though I don't know when I will get around to watching the redux version of ROTJ I still am glad to have it in my collection.

BTW, most fans seem to be split on what is their favorite Star Wars film between either "The Empire Strikes Back (ep. 2)", and "(ep. 3) Return Of The Jedi". I believe that is saying an awful lot for both these films. Personally I would have to say the original "A New Hope" is the most important and the basis for all the others, but that's just me. I wouldn't want to live in a world without any of them so just watch them all.

Side note: To anyone new to the Star Wars saga; I recommend watching the films in the order they were released in, not in numerical order. The story unfolds naturally the way it was intended to that way. So episodes 4, 5, 6, then 1, 2, 3, then I recommend you either see Episode 7 right away or brush up on the original trilogy 4, 5, and 6 again then go see it.

One disc of the enhanced version. One with the original 1983 release. A great little combo.

To my knowledge, this 2006 release is the only set that offers a DVD of the untouched, original version of the film that audiences saw in 1983. (The set also includes one of the "enhanced" versions, in case you aren't curious about how they could even do a movie like this in the early 80s.)Read full review...

A New Ending

This movie, and all the others in the series, is timeless. The updates have definitely made it more realistic and exciting, as far as the explosions and things like that go. I've loved watching these movies again with all of their enhancements - particularly the destruction of the death star and the views from cloud city. However, I have to say my favorite and most stunning surprise was when the new guy - you know, what's his name - that plays Darth in the pre-quils shows up at the end of A New Hope with Obi Wan and Yoda in spirit form. AWESOME! It just tied it all together. I hope lituature buffs will forgive me, but my mouth was hanging open just like it was when I read the last page of Gone With the Wind (not a total comparison, just a stunning ending).Read full review...

Star Wars VI - Return Of The Jedi 2-Disc Limited Edition

What else great things can I say that haven't been said about this classic phenomenon! The reason I bought this is to add it to my all-time classic collection. Owning a piece of history and not to mention-a limited edition that exclusively has 2 versions of the movie that's not even in the blu-ray. Due to public (Fans of Star wars) overwhelming demand of the original version that was shown on theatres, George Lucas released it with the enhanced version in this out of print 2-disc set dvd.Read full review...

The way there were meant to be

These movies, quality aside, are exactly as I remember watching them as a kid. I didn't have the opportunity to watch these movies in the theaters because I wasn't alive, but I remember watching them on VHS with my parents. It is a shame that the audio nor the video are the best, but they are still so much fun to watch. I'm glad I have them again. Han shoots first!Read full review...

Star Wars, the way it was meant to be - at least to me

I do not find anything wrong with George Lucas continuing to rework his original Star Wars Trilogy. They are important films to him, and he, as the filmmaker and creator of that universe has every right to adjust and add to his films.

But, I grew up loving the original Star Wars Trilogy, and my youthful eyes at that time beheld what I thought was a perfect set of films. I have oft longed to see those films again the way they were then, in a widescreen format, and on something better than my old VHS tapes. So when these films were released in Sept, I was delighted. Unaltered and original, these are the movies the way that, to me, they are meant to be.

Great movie! See Star Wars with original theatrical release and commentary.

Great movie. Love the original cast and conclusion of the story line when Star Wars was Star Wars! The ending showdown is epic.
