A great movie in history of special effects.

A movie from my childhood, The Dark Crystal is a fable/fairy tale like story that uses the state-of-the-art special effects of it's time in the early 80's. Designed around famed fantasy artist Brian Froud's designs, Jim Henson builds costumes, puppetry, and imaginative environments to support the story of good vs. evil. Even though the movie is older, it is historically relevant in terms of special effects production, and it's underlying story is compelling as it's an adventure line. There may be plenty of 3D and computer generated graphics in the movies these days, but, back then, you had to support "Suspension of Disbelief" with intricately detailed costumes and puppets along with a large crew of manipulators versed in dance, choreography, theater, and technical problem solving, when making a fantasy/science fiction movie. Consider the Yoda of Star Wars past, a puppet; and Yoda of the Clone Wars today, now computer generated. Both have different looks and feels. The Dark Crystal is a great movie.Read full review...
