Solved my home networking issue

The purpose of this product is to transmit computer networking traffic through standard household electrical wiring. WiFi in my rented house was not working well between floors. I have no knowledge of the condition of the wiring in this house, but I knew I couldn't run a cat5 cable through the floor, so I thought that this might be a good alternative.

Synchronization between the two devices was very quick, and setting up the wifi capability to clone my current network was so easy that I accidentally completed the process before I decided that was the route I wanted to go. It did take a couple of minutes to get the cat5 connection to establish an Internet connection. But once I confirmed it on a laptop I plugged it in to a rather old and no longer supported streaming media box to get Netflix in our guest room and it works great. Had one event where the house lost power and the devices did not automatically re-sync when power was restored, but I just turned them off and on again and they clicked right into place.

This is a very fast and economical solution if you are experiencing wifi "dead zones" in your house and your home's electrical wiring can support it. It doesn't require drilling any holes or even much of a knowledge of computer networking. It might not work in very old homes, but if your home electrical wiring conforms to current codes then you should be fine.

Good product, but incompatible with other brands

In itself this is a good Netgear product. However, there are multiple compatibility issues:

- If you have a prior Powerline network created with a different brand, Netgear units don't play well with it, even if it's Homeplus AV compliant (I've spent hours on online forums, and I'm not the only one to have these issues). I simply had to abandon the previous Zyxel units (sigh!) since I needed the wireless extender capability of Netgear XWN5001 more at this point.

- It DOES NOT work right out of the box like it should. For example, you are supposed to have a NETGEAR_EXT SSID available right away, with WiFi either (a) Disabled, or (b) with a WiFi security code, or (c) with a WiFi passphrase written on the back of the XWN5001 unit - depending on which part of the manual you want to believe. In any case, none of them work! Just use the WPS on your broadband router to replicate the SSID. That's the only way I could get it to work.

- Config utility or what they call Netgear Genie will not work on Mac - be aware if you are a Mac-only household

- Documentation is confusing and conflicting - one example given above. There are multiple ones.

All in all, this took way longer than it should have. When I first bought my Zyxel units years ago, it took me literally one minute to do the setup. Netgear has a long way to go in that regard.

Not great

The center signal light goes from green to amber frequently, tried different outlets and had similar results. It meant the power line is not nearly as good as ethernet connections. The wireless output was only about half the speed of that from the router. It is better than nothing if the router can't reach certain area of the house. But there are other solutions, like moving the router to a more central location or replacing the router antenna with more powerful antennas. Read full review

Not getting but 50mpbs with 150mbps

In a small apartment I am only getting around 50mpbs with these connected to a Belkin AC1900 router with a 150Mbps download. The upload is fine at 25Mbps but the download is terrible. The wifi is the same speeds. I had an ActionTek brand that worked better but only lasted 1 week before it fried. These things get really hot just an FYI. I paid 20$ for it on ebay and wish I hadn't as my Wifi from my router works better than these. I get around 60 - 90Mpbs with my wireless so these are slightly slower than my previous setup. I guess the wireless access point is worth it just in case I guess. Read full review

Good for extenting wifi to outlying buildings on your power line.

I have a workshop in a separate building about 100 ft from my wireless router and wifi is spotty to non-existant, I have tried boosters in the house but they also were spotty. I added this and was easily able to get good wifi speeds over the powerlines. I have to play around with outlets on both ends to get a good connection on the same power line leg and have duplicated the SSID to be the same on both. This has been working well on most devices. I have however recently had issues with devices near the main router picking up the remote device which is lower power so I may have to change the remote SSID so this will not happen, but otherwise I am happy with performance.Read full review

Works great but not easy to setup

The documentation does not refelect what is on the screen, but when you finally get it to work in secure mode (with a password, that was the main challenge) it works very well.

Fantastic Product

It could not be easier. Plug and Play system for your home. I just purchased this package to go with the other 4 of this type device I use in my home. Media server in the garage supplies HD Movies to the entire home thru these. One on lower patio and One on upper patio provide internet service to every computer I own. I service computers and recommend these to my customers. It was interesting that these were marked used, but when received they appeared to be factory sealed and unused. I have one pair of these that I run our Tivo thru that are 5 years old and work flawless on HD Tivo Movies, Netflix and Hulu. Some have problems making them work, but all I have ever done is plug them in and start using them. For me, they work flawlessly. Read full review

Great value!

These work great for spots in your house where your WiFi signal is weak. After installing we were getting excellent download speeds, however the upload speeds were not near as good. Overall a great product for the price.Read full review

Best for wired

For this thinking the wifi would be good also. Ethernet works well but wifi speeds are much slower. We get better speeds with 1 bar signal from our router across the house than we do from this in the same room. Wifi was disappointing.Read full review
