One of the Greatest Prodigies (and Violinists)

Perlman's first recordings, some of which are included here, are simply superb. You just rarely here violin playing near this level today as the closest to him today would be Vengerov (who does not perform much) and Shaham (who is wonderful, but largely moved away from some of this type of repertoire). In fact, short works and showpieces - or violin recitals - are not as common as when Perlman toured the world with programs that featured some of these gems. Everyone often, like a Heifetz recital, could not wait for the encores or in Perlman's case - the second half just said "to be announced from the stage). This captures the amazing violin playing from those days, and in terms of sound - the early Perlman recordings can be much more pleasurable than the early digital EMI recordings - as EMI struggled with digital technology when it started. So I recommend this recording for its historic value, some of the music that made him so beloved, and the analog sound that really showed Perlman's sound at its best.Read full review...
