Great game and a huge breath of fresh air for the franchise.

Mortal Kombat has been a series that is most notable for its gore and hilarious use of overly-violent fighting. It had a humble beginning as a series that eventually exploded in popularity with Mortal Kombat 2 and Mortal Kombat 3. After that, the series began to taper off, and the quality began to falter greatly with the jump to 3D. So much so that the series was eventually sold off.

Naturally, I was a little skeptical of this release of Mortal Kombat, as the previous installments have been less than stellar. I was able to get the game used for cheaper than expected, so I took a chance and honestly? It was well worth it.

The game returns to its roots. Even though it's a 3D game, it plays like a classic 2D fighter. And the developers focused more on quality than quantity, which was a huge plaguing issue for Mortal Kombat: Armageddon. Each character has distinct fighting styles, moves, and characteristics. However, as everyone still has overall the same basic moveset (down + punch = uppercut; back + kick = sweep; etc.), the characters themselves are all relatively similar. Though this is also positive considering that it's easily approachable by newcomers.

The game itself plays very smoothly, even though the game does seem to cheat at times (seriously- the AI seems a little too good at times and Shao Kahn (the final boss) does a tremendous amount of damage in a very little amount of time). Additional modes are welcomed, such as tag-team co-op to play online and through the arcade mode. Old favorites such as Test Your Might return as well. There's also a very detailed story mode, but it can be a bit awkward at times, and even at the end you may be left scratching your head, especially since it hints heavily at another installment of Mortal Kombat coming soon. After you finish the story, you'll understand what I mean when I say that it's a little confusing to continue the series considering.

With that in mind, the game itself still feels relatively sparse. You can collect koins and such currency to use in the Krypt which has returned. However, unless you care a lot about the game's music and art, there's not much to be found in exchange for coins. If you don't care about collecting the art and music, you'll likely end up like me and end up with a stockpile of koins with nothing to spend them on. There are also only two characters that you can unlock in the game: Quan Chi and Cyber Sub Zero. The boss characters are locked throughout the game, which is kind of disappointing, but also very understandable as they could easily break the game.

And finally, there is a noticeable gap between character tiers. Some characters really are just better than others. If you don't believe me, you can consult Bradygames' guide and see the tiers. Some characters are difficult to deal with because of their special moves, and in the AI's hands, some characters use the special moves to disturbing efficiency. Though this idea isn't anything new, as even popular games like Marvel VS Capcom 2 have notable tiers, it can kind of take away from the game when the difficulty suddenly spikes.

The bottom line though comes to whether or not the game is fun, and it is. I'm not sure I would recommend it at full price, but the game is very enjoyable for a fighting game. Compared to the previous installments, it's a fun breath of fresh air with fun modes, but not a lot of substance.

It is still a great video game if you don't mind the carnage!

The 2011 version of Mortal Combat is certainly an advancement in martial arts video games. Great graphics, fantastic characters, tag team competition and a suitable assortment of fighting moves to keep it interesting enough to enjoy for some time. And of course those classic Mortal Combat finishing moves we have all come to love so much. So if you despise gore, then definately stay away. If you want to make a comparison, then lets say for instance Virtual Fighter 5(rated T for Teen). Released in 2005 Virtual Fighter 5 has a larger assortment of fighting moves, a slightly less colorful aray of characters but does not offer "Tag Team" fighting. I love them both! Which one is a better game? I would say that it's just a matter of taste. I like more moves but I also enjoy the gore. Despite it all this most recent version of Mortal Combat is among some of the very best of video fighting games ever released, in my opinion. So enjoy!Read full review...

Love it!! A must get for MK fans everywhere!! Gorey, burtal, awesome!

This is a must get for any MK fan. The detail in this game is just grotesque, making it that much more great. The story mode offers a whole new experience and is longer than most might expect. Tag team, the challenge tower.... these are what make this game a lot of fun compared to past iterations. On top of everything else that makes MK great, the ps3 versions allows the use of Kratos from god of war. It even has a stage for God of War 3 with 3 different stage fatalities. The only downside is having to purchase the kombat pass in order to play online. All new copies come with it but if you get a used copy without the pass (unused), you'll have to dish out 10 bucks I think. Otherwise, you're only left with a 2 day trial.Read full review...

Kratos and Krueger's newist addition to MK makes this outstanding!

I am a Mortal Kombat fan, for years to come. This was great, with all the graphics, and such, I will explain why the 4 stars down below.
I will say there was a problem with PS3 only having Kratos, while Xbox 360 with out him. I feel he should have been in both.
He is pretty badass though. An excellent addition to the family.
Now there is a AWESOME addition as well, Freddy Krueger!
I did not like how you had to buy rain while he was on the others. But I did it anyhow.
There are many awesome moves.
The story, some bits of it is very over done with the fighting. You hardly have a chance half the time. But it is a typical challenge.
I would suggest this game to a MK vetern, this was a great new game out on the market, I have not tried all the features yet, but what I have, it is very intense, and curious. Very well thought in many ways. The women were made a bit too slutty for my taste. Smoke looks Horrible!!! He is not to have his hair all out and looking normal. Definately a let down. Noob is and always will be one of my favorites. He was a badass all the way! I was very impressed in him.
I could go on and on, but there is always something about a game you may or may not like. This had a few bad things, but all in all, it is pretty well, a typical MK challenge, which is fantastic!

Get it and you will not regret!

I played this a while ago in my buddy's spot. This is by far one of the most interesting game to play with friends together. The moves are awesome and those X-ray specials are just gore! I am amazed that the graphics are so cool. Fatalities are hilarious as usual. The best feature is its quick pace online multiplayer. You can tag with your buddy and fight other teams. The story is also cool, it gives you the background of this total madness and let you practice with different characters until you find one works best for you. Overall, I gave it 8/10.Read full review...

Really cool looking. X Ray moves!

As far as Mortal Kombat games go, this is pretty great the way it functions and looks. The X-Ray moves are the coolest thing ever but there are too many repetitions of the same moves (at least early on in the game). I don't play these types of games enough to do more than check them out. I won't beat too much therefore I don't know if there are any other XRay moves to unlock or not. If so, this game is more of a winner. If not, I'd rather give this game a 3. But as far as looks go this game is pretty cool. Again, repetition is the problem; altho anyone who knows the series or type of fighting game this is tends to be very repetitive.Read full review...

AWESOME GAME !!!! IT A MUST HAVE Adult series type game!!!! (lot of blood!)

What can I say. Its Komabt Time !!! If your a fan of the old mortal komabt, and you remember the best of the series.., then this game will blow your mind.

|--Copied from http://www.co-optimus.com/blogs/brent-douglas/235/mortal-kombat-9-review.html|

"As many fighting games, Mortal Kombat series has always had a apparent spot in the fighting game genre. Its most up to date personification is not much different, pushing away the love to the extreme with over the top attack moves that see you ripping your enemies in pieces, impaling them on spikes, and stomping on their chests while their organs wobble around like moving tetherballs.

Each fight you have is marked, taking you on a wonderful journey that bring up the narrative from the very first three Mortal Kombat games. The story starts where Mortal Kombat: Armageddon left off, with Thunder God Raiden under attack from Shao Kahn, an evil emperor hell-bent on merging Outworld with Earth Realm – an insane process that threatens to end all life on the planet. Raiden sends a message to his past self in order to prevent that outcome, which manifests itself as a series of visions. Though he’s not really sure what the visions mean, Raiden begins to help the people of Earth Realm compete in the Mortal Kombat tournament, which decides the fate of the two worlds. By using the time travel mechanic, the story mode does a great job of introducing new players to the awesome series. If you’re not a fan of cut scenes you can’t skip them, even if you’ve already watched them when you resume a game. You also cannot choose to replay different sections of Story mode, even after you’ve completed it.

You take the role of the actor Johnny Cage, who has a chesty personality. You play as different fighters as you progress through the story, most of them made an appearance in the first three series. They include classic fighters such as Scorpion, Sub Zero, and Liu Kang, and later series. You’re also taken through a lot of environments, which look fantastic, they are full of detail. PlayStation 3 users have the very option of playing in 3D. Each time you change characters in Story mode you learn about their origins for joining the tournament. Each character is voiced very well, and because there’s some motivation for the fighters, there’s more than just gameplay to keep you interested until the end of the five hour narrative.

Not to say the gameplay isn’t enough to keep you entertained, very far from it. Your main objective is to knock out your enemy using a variety of kicks, punches, and special attacks. Pulling off tricky moves is difficult, there are four primary attack buttons, but rather than creating high and low attacks, each button now corresponds to a limb.

With all that said, Mortal Kombat is one of the most complete fighting games on the market. The come back to the 2D fighting genre has made Mortal Kombat better content for new players. Also, not any fighting game allows you to attack your enemies in the groin area!"

|As I can only say..., THIS GAME KICKS SERIOUS EFFIN ARSE !!!!
IF you got ps3 or 360.., GET THIS GAME !!! You wont be dissappointed !!|

Mortal Kombat still lives!!!

They spent nearly two decades since it first appeared in Mortal Kombat. In an era where "xylikia" with cartoon heroes gave and took, while Capcom's Street Fighter conquer the Midway dared to offer something different that nobody had thought. With realistic graphics, portrayed different types of fighters but were immediately known, while the game was singled out for harsh violence produced by the Fatalities.

The sequel that followed had a positive response, but then was not the same. In Mortal Kombat III absent main characters and one version each year, the whole stage reminded ... squeezed. From 2004 until today, Midway has turned to 3D, releasing three next-gen versions. This year, three years after its last issue, we have a reboot of the franchise, as all good old characters reappear and once again becomes the gameplay 2D. So to see whether it gives the new formula, which takes care of the newly NetherRealm Studios, many of which the staff previously worked for Midway.

Cult movie
In Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe we first development plot and the feature back and Mortal Kombat. Known to all our heroes talking to each other, sometimes throwing and no xyliki and the whole scene refers to a film cult. We did not expect any huge script, just to humor there, the way events unfold is quite curious.

The Story Mode is divided into chapters. Each chapter undertakes a specific character. But the poor quality of dialogue and that battle again and again with them and nobody is killed, it becomes somewhat xeneroto. Fatalities in the Story Mode there (are found in everything else). Lacking even the action sequences of MK vs DC, where it falls on deaf ears at the time of the battle and had to press the buttons in the correct order. Your interest is maintained simply by 'dry' battles and the simple curiosity of what will happen afterwards.

The overall experience gained from the Story Mode took around 4 hours, with no possibility to skip the cutscenes, which to most would seem tedious. Save and Load does not exist, so when you Quit simply continue from where you left off and even watching it again last videos played.

Characters
This year's roster consists of all known fighters who knew from the Mortal Kombat I and II, by adding more memorable than the next that followed. All veterans are here. The Liu Kang, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Johnny Cage, Raiden, Sonya, Kano and Reptile from the first part. The Baraka, Jax, Kitana, Mileena and Kung Lao from the second part. So the most memorable from the third party, as well and the Shang Tsung, longer eligible. We say a roster of 27 characters. However, some of them are unlocked only after you quit the game.

On the issue of choice status, choose the one you used before, after review of the best known. The balancing is not achieved the ultimate degree, as we meet once privileged persons, such as Scorpion and Sub-Zero, mainly because of the powerful attacks of covering every possible scenario.

The Playstation 3 is available and the Kratos, which blends perfectly with the climate. It uses the blades to be identified quickly perform combos with them and has some impressive special moves like lightning-fast run in flames. The Fatality of it is the most bloody and cuts in both the victim with the use of blades.

For those interested, two other new characters, Kenshi and Scarlet, are available to purchase via DLC. In short, we have a total of 29 characters on the Xbox 360 version and 30

One of the best fighting games released in recent memory

If you grew up playing arcade games like Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter 2 in the arcades, this is an excellent game that brings Mortal Kombat back to its more competitive roots. While the 3D games were kind of fun, they lacked the mortal kombat feel and the fighting was slow and shallow. Specials mid combo were highly limited and being unable to cancel from normals into special moves really hampered the already shallow fighting mechanics. And though the characters had different fighting styles, they largely remained the same due to the limitations of the fighting engine. They were fun games, but they could have been so much better. When the PS3 and 360 were released, MK vs DC came out and though it was largely considered not to be a tournament worthy fighter and made no pretences to be such, it had the best mechanics in a 3D mortal kombat game. As specials were again at the forefront of the mechanics, and not just simple projectiles that can easily be avoided, it helped set the characters apart even more. Despite not having the extreme levels of blood and gore found in previous Mortal Kombat games, the gameplay had a fair bit of depth whilest being very accessible to gamers, and a step in the right direction. Had they simply made a more refined MK vs DC for a new MK game, I would have been content as I didn't really care for the franchise being a tournament worthy game. Now comes Mortal Kombat 9. While still more accessible than street fighter 4, though I will say I believe the difference is largely due to the strict rules for linking normal attacks to make combos is SF4 which made it difficult for many people, MK9 is a more competitive, tournament worthy and balanced game compared to previous entries. The fighting is faster and I dare say smoother than SSF4, but a lot slower than Marvel vs Capcom 3.Read full review...
