Darkman - Good Entertainment - But Not Great

Darkman was filmed before comic book movies became common, but more importantly, Darkman was filmed before comic book movies were any good! Up to that point, most attempts (the Christoper Reeve version of SUPERMAN is a notable exception)at bringing super hero action to the theatre were lacking. Spidey hadn't graced the big screen yet, X-Men hadn't even been talked about. Sam Raimi put out his film noir - comc bookish - Darkman way before its time and way before these films came into vogue.
This film is fun and has its cheesy moments (intended cheese)for sure, but considering the budget it was made on and the time it was made IN..you have to give it credit.
I do think that if the storyline had been a bit more serious and dark and a little less campy and intentionally crazy - Raimi could have produced a film that would have been sci fi classic and a character that would have been as memorable as many icons. But we have to remember that Sam Raimi didn't command the sort of respect and revere that he does now when he made Darkman. In fact, Raimi was known primarily for his Evil Dead films and was largely considered a cult film director.
So, watch it, enjoy it and take it for what it is. It was good for its time, and the special effects actually stand up pretty good by today's standards. It is also neat seeing Liam Neeson in the role, considering the direction his acting career has taken in the years since then.
Oh, and don't bother with the sequels - which Raimi had no part in.Read full review...

Intriguing, Mysterious

In this movie, Darkman, Dr. Peyton Westlake has been dating Julie who is a Lawyer and plans to marry to her. He's gotten so involved with his latest invention that he has begun to ignore Julie. Peyton's latest invention is to help burn victims which is an aritificial skin. A terrible accident takes place and Dr Peyton's Lab along with him are in an explosion. Dr. Peyton managed to survive and discovers it was not an accident. Like a madman, he mind plays games on him and he seeking revenge. One of Julie's crooked clients sent one of his gangsters to Peyton's Lab to retrieve an incriminating document and that is when the Lab was blown up. Peyton receives medical treatment that has made him feel stronger and not feel pain. He rebuilds in LAB in secret and begins to use his synthetic skin to impersonate different people. He is using these short-lived synthetic skin masks to be with Julie and to capture the crooks.Read full review...

Comic-Book-like super hero

This movie is great if you are into comic book super heroes; Darkman is vengeful and full of heart toward his justice on the villians who created his demise.
The action, the directing, and the story are VERY unique and entertaining, indeed!! I love these old 90s flicks w/a glossy finish on the matted film. They give the movie (and audience) a draw inward toward the story and the plot, while watching the movie is addictive, nonetheless!!
Darkman is Great!! It's better than Spiderman, and very similar to the other 90s movies that came out during that time: i.e. THE PHANTOM, THE SHADOW, ZORRO, and just as much fun to watch over and over!!!!
Get it and watch it at least twice; you won't be disappointed!!!!!Read full review...

Darkman

Sam Raimi at his best with a whole new comic book hero. Excellent cast that plays it straight, even a Bruce Campbell (as usual) & the Delta 88 cameos. This film is still pre-Spiderman & doesn't have the blockbuster budget, but that doesn't diminish Raimi's directorial fun. If you don't like comic heros, don't bother, you may find it campy & silly in spots. Otherwise, it fits the bill far better than prior, more expensive attempts.Read full review...
