Cobra 1000 low on price, not so easy to use

Compared to the other more expensive brands of GPW out there now a days, the Cobra 1000 is definately old technology.

B/W screen, low res graphics and hard to use route preparation and tracking are the low points. ,Unlike newer GPS units that have touch screens for number and letter buttons to program destinations and routes, you can not program this unit without the aid of a computer that has the software.

This unit does allow you to navigate on water and in the woods, so if you have a boat or hunt or hike, this might be a low priced choice. It also runs on batteries, so it doesn't have to be connected to a vehicle, and you can carry it with you on foot.

cobra 1000dlx gps receiver

needed gps for wilderness adventure i'm going on, unit has a good clear screen and fairly easy button system to operate, battery life seems rather short, but is acceptable.accessory cord for cigar lighter power has no feature to fasten cable to unit and slides off to easily, also setting on the dash in the sun caused to screen to go dark and the unit unusable untill it cooled off. the other function of the power cord is the computer patch cord, it has an old style 9 pin socket that doesn't match any thing on my computer, i'll try to find an adaptor. i believe the problem is that this unit is almost 5 years old even though it's factory reconditioned. If you can live with old technology it's a good buy .Read full review...

Excellent for Historical GPS maping

I purchased this GPS to mark Historical locations which I will use for maping only.
It wanted as few features that would be unused. There are features I use that I did not think I would need however. I love that fact that it comes with maping software. The user directions are not very easy to understand in some instances. I used the tech support web site for Cobra (most often asked questions) and the anwsers to questions already out there got me up and running efficiently. I love simplicity and the directions lack that.
The product does work well and does exactly what I hoped it would.

nice item

The gps 1000 dlx comes with a complete set of US streetlevel CD maps by Rand McNally. Very Very detailed! It even shows the islands/dividers in the street.
THe unit is easy to handle and to update with maps. You can upload data back to the computer and track the way you just took on the map. The gps is very precice.
There is an updated firmware available on the cobra website though. Sometimes it might be better to have not to many maps activated simultaneously. So the unit can map/update the current location fasten when driving around. All data can be stored onto the sd card so a powerloss is not a problem.

Good GPS equipment with software limitations.

I purchased the Cobra 1000 GPS unit after looking into the equipment features and it's capabilities in their product literature. However, after I received it I found that the computer interface was a serial connection and not a standard USB which was not mentioned in the product literature. In addition the Cobra solutions software also known as Streetfinder would not function properly on my computer nor would it download properly to the GPS unit. Qustions to the software manufacturer and Cobra were unanswered. I would not recomend this receiver to anyone.Read full review...

Nice Unit

Anyone with any sort of computer/technology knowledge should be able to use the unit with out any complications or confusion. Very detailed and upload personal maps of specific areas. Comes with a DVD to explain functions. May not be as fancy as newer GPS units but reliable and accurate.Read full review...

Serial Port Connection

Like large screen and ability to make font LARGE. Downside is serial port (9 pin) connection. I don't have a computer with one of those anymore! Adapter cable caused problems. Not really compatible with Windows XP: Win98 anyone?Read full review...

Good experience, time to upgrade

I used this as an inexperienced user of GPS systems. This was a good starter for me. I used it for geo-caching, hunting in the woods, and long trips as an in-car GPS system. It worked as well as I expected.Read full review...

Get you out of the woods GPS

I like the fact that it is a GPS. I did not know much about the unit but needed something like this for backpacking. The price was good, but the item does not have a very good response and it is very slow. This
GPS will get you out of the woods though. If I was offered this item again I would not buy it.
