Maybe The Best Movie Ever Made

Now I know the general public may not agree ant the critics and the acadamy have shuned this one from the start.. But hey, noone spent 50 gazillion dollars shooting a film about nothing. Did They? Here we we have a story, and truer stories never told, real peolple, broken people, people with hope and people with no hope. Sounds like somebody we just minght all know. I just don't understand how a movie wih Scarlet Johansen and John Travolta only managed a little over $150,000 at the box office. I guess it was the release. Personally I never heard of it until I saw it on show. This movie Blew me away from scene one. John Travolta smoking a crushed up cigarette, a big black toe, two different shoes, grey hair, walking the leveeys of New Orleans with Los Lobos playing "Someday". It was as if some one had jumped into my mind and stolen my perfect begining to a story I would tell. So familiar yet so different. Not a typical Travolta role, but beleive me it may be his best work. He is an out of work Collage Professor who had it all and lost it. Moves to New Orleans hoping to find redemption he sinks into a life of alcoholisim and dubachary. Along for the ride he bring his young Protoge from The University of Auburn in Alabama. There they find lots of friends accepting of their lifstyle if not even willing enough to partake. Now backin that opening scene I mentioned before was a funeral, a funeral of one of the pack and allthough she is never seen in this movie her spirit lingers on in every scen, espically when Perciline, (Scarlet Johansen) Her Daughter comes to pay her last respects and ends up staying with Bobby Long, (John T) and His Prtoge. I have to pick my kids up from school, Just watch the movie, It will be doing your self a favor and the music is great. If only all people got shit like this movie...Read full review...

A heart-moving story with superb cast--a must-watch true Classic!

One of my favorite movies of all time! And hardly known--never really got press. But the producers locked in a very young Scarlett Johansson years ahead of production on this film while she was still about 15 and hadn't yet done Girl w.Pearl Earring. I love the juicy New Orleans-ness of it, and the story--wrestling with failed lives & alcoholism, the directing, the actors--all are just superb. John Travolta is fabulous. I watch this film again and again thru the years. I'll just be in the mood for it! This is one of those real gut-level stories that moves you. I have my own copy & bought this for a girlfriend & her husband who live across the country from me & had never even heard of it, and they watched it and loved it, too. They especially liked the cinematography & the down home Nyew Aw-lins locale. My friend curiously just happened to be reading Carson McCullers "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter" when she received the dvd from me! Synchronicity! I'd recommend this film--5 Stars--very highly as a little-known, undiscovered "classic".Read full review...

An early Scarlett marvel

It's a pleasure to watch young Scarlett Johanssson and to see Travolta in a role unlike any other he's played. The movie is necessarily slow at times, but that gives you time to reflection of the relationships and what else is happening. Even some of the deleted scenes are engaging. So, yes, it's different - but in a good way.Read full review...

WE KNEW HE COULD ACT, BUT THIS IS RAW TRAVOLTA WOW

GREAT, great movie even though they made the female skinny instead of fat, a disservice in my opinion. But disregarding the book, this movie has so much to offer for those of us who drank too much, made mistakes, loved and learned on the way despite our stubborn streaks, glory hallelujah watch this movie. I cried and laughed as did my husband and we both sat riveted without a pause for pee or popcorn - that's saying something right there. I wanted to watch the movie again immediately and would have if it weren't for hunger and bathroom necessity. SEE THIS MOVIE not just for John Travolta; for life and love and the common man.Read full review...

GREAT movei! Seriously under promoted.

This is a beautiful movie, part love story part life story. Scarlett Johansson and John Travolta were really great and made their characters come to life, and believable. This movie is a "sleeper" and wasn't promoted much, but is a definite must see!Read full review...

A Love Song for Bobby Long

I just happened to catch this movie on tv and I was completely CHARMED!! I laughed--I cried--this sleeper meets all those requirements that are necessary in a great movie. It is now near the top of my list of favorite movies ever! I have encouraged everyone I know to rent --if they do not rent it---I buy it for them. There is strong adult content(mostly the language)but, the message is important & I found every one of the characters so endearing!.(I think that even those folks who are NOT John Travolta fans will love this movie)Read full review...

Dumb Name: GREAT Movie!

O.K. I admit it, I bought this DVD specifically for the brief topless scene with Scarlett Johansson. And trust me, it is a nice one. The kind of thing DVD players have a zoom button for. However as I watched this movie I fell in love with it. The performances are wonderful. Scarlett once again shows that she is not just a pretty face. The camera work is well done if a bit plain. (The following will NOT spoil anything) In one scene early in the movie, Scarlett Johansson’s character is sitting on a sofa eating peanut butter and M&Ms. She is surrounded with other empty junk food wrappers. This scene is TOTALLY unbelievable! For if Scarlett’s character had truly eaten like that on the regular basis, she would be fat and ugly. Not the slim and sexy character she is and plays. I know this is nit picking, but it did bother me a little. I highly recommend this movie to any film buff. It is quite enjoyableRead full review...

Title is a sleeper. Too easy to pass up.

This is an excellent but little known movie. If you love New Orleans, you will love this movie. Trravolta should have had an Oscar for this role. He is so convincing that I didn't know it was him until the move ended.
THe music is great, and the movie is excellent.

One Of My Favorites

New Orleans conjures up romantic images of warm nights and cool jazz. The title of this movie seems hardly appropriate as the movie begins... only as the plot unfolds does the "love song" bloom. The viewer will finally feel the love and the build up will then make sense.

4.5 out of 5 stars.
