If you like the previous nightmare movie, it is worth a look, Maybe

Ok, first off,I have read a lot of reviews telling you to not go into this comparing this to the original, and with good reason. Compared to the original, this movie is an epic fail. On it's own merits however, it is not too bad, well not that bad...ok it isn't great. The general reworking of Freddy kruegers backstory lends a different point of view to the film as a whole, and Jackie Earle Haley does an admirable job filling Robert Englunds shoes, but a poor script and bad acting on the part of most of the teen leads does nothing to elevate this remake above the scores of other trendy CW/WB inspired teen slasher reboots of late. There is very little suspense and pathetic pacing, instead we get lots of false jump scares and strange micronap sequences. Where the original left you guessing as to whether the heroine was asleep or awake, the remake makes it all too obvious. Rooney Mara was a standout as possibly the worst actress in the film (which was quite a feat). Sadly the scenes in the film made to be homages to the original just serve to remind you that you are not , in fact, watching the original. This film stands on the desire of fans wanting to see Krueger on the big screen one more time, and Platinum Dunes desire to milk the Nightmare cash cow for it's last drop.Read full review...

ONE OF THE BEST HORROR REMAKES!

I was having doubts to seeing another remake to one of the greatest horror movies ever made like A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET. Most of the remakes have been total failures in my opinion, and never should have been made in the first place. Therefore I could not believe that I actually enjoyed this movie which is why I decided to buy it. The remake manages to be pretty frightening, and it is a fresh start to what can be a whole new series of decent films. I thought there was some creative effort behind recreating some of those iconic scenes from the original along with some new ideas for scenes which were done quite well. I also felt this movie tried to remain faithful to fans of the original instead of just cashing in on the franchise. The later Nightmare on Elm Street sequels with Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger began to loose some of their shock value, and became somewhat inferior to Wes Cravens original concept. There was also critisism from fans of the original series that Freddy was no longer frightening. In this film Freddy was designed to be much darker, and less comical towards his victims. I thought this was the right approach to take this time around. Obviously there are fans who are in favor of what Robert Englund had established as the character, and I am one of them. Jackie Earle Haley deserves credit also for creating a memorable performance as Freddy. The same can be said for Rooney Mara who delivers a fine performance as Nancy Holbrook. Some fans will dislike this movie because it is without Robert Englund. The truth is Robert Englund refused to be involved with this film although has said to have liked the casting of the roles. The soundrack however is quite lame by comparison to the original which is so iconic. The same can be said for Jackie Earl Haileys facial makeup which comes across for being rather unimpressive. I consider the remake to be better though than the later sequels to the 1984 original.Read full review...

"Why remake films? They are never as good as the originals" that's what my mum used to say. Well, the reason that movies are remade is because the intended audience (in this case 18-30 year olds) were not born (or were very young) when the original Nightmare On Elm Street was released in cinemas. That's why mum, take the film for what it is, not for what something else is. Anywhoo, this is a reboot/retelling/reimagining of the classic 80's horror flick, but is it any good?

Well, if you saw the rating I gave it at the top of the page, you can probably guess what I think. Yes, it is pretty good and it measures up very well to the original. I don't care what other people have said, personally I think this takes the original premise, spins it around a bit, fleshes it out, makes it more modern, and overall I think it works better because of it. I'm sure you all know the story, Freddy Krueger has the power to visit people in their nightmares and kill them. It is never explained actually HOW he can do this (to be fair, I don't remember it being explained in the original either) but it worked fine back then and it works just as good now. In the remake they even go to the bother of fleshing out the Freddy character and making him more unlikable, because lets face it, by the end of the series of the original movies, Freddy was more of an anti-hero than a vile villain who kills children.

What I like about the Nightmare on Elm Street premise is that they have a set of rules and they stick to it. You take a movie like Halloween or The Hills Have Eyes, and the bad guy can appear out of nowhere, they can be chasing you from twenty feet behind and then somehow suddenly they are in front of you. That makes no sense, in the Nightmare world it makes perfect sense because that is the kind of weird stuff that happens in nightmares (sure, it's a cop-out, but it works very well given the set of "rules" that the film follows)

If you have not seen the original, great! You can watch this with an unbiased view. If you have, like myself, seen the original (and the numerous sequels) you should still get a lot of enjoyment from this version of the movie, watching how they have "recreated" some of the characters and updated the original plot for modern moviegoers. Well worth a look if you are a horror fan.

New nightmare is old nightmare..almost

well..i'm kind of mixed on this movie...while overall i like it ..it was hard to see someone else play freddy, but by the end of the movie the new freddy is a little more acceptable, but not Robert England by any stretch. In this movie you get a little more background about Freddy's life but this really has been all told in the other films. Some of the killing will look old hat to most people who watched the other freddy films but overall this is a good way to interduct the new generation to the Nightmare that is Freddy.Read full review...

Apples and Oranges

While this is no where near as good as the original, not even close, it's still watchable. I liked it. Let's be honest, the original Freddy is a tough act to follow ...all these 1 star ratings are just people that expected way too much and are going off the deep end with their reviews ...If you had never in your life seen the original N.O.E.S then you would probably like this movie ...before you watch it just throw the original out of your head and don't waste the whole movie comparing the two. I also agree with the person that said Horror Movies are no where near as scary as they used to be ...It's almost laughable. I don't know if this is because I'm older now, or it's the actual movies themselves, but most "Horrors" these days are hardly horrificRead full review...

It's not the original but it'll work

Freddy Krueger sounds like his mask is loose in this nightmare on Elm Street.

Nightmare remake is worth buying!

For a remake, this is a good movie. I believe they have changed some scenes a little from the original, but it is overall a good movie. If you like halloween movies, it's a good one. I will say they don't make scary movies that scary any more though. Definitely better than the critics 1 out of 5 stars.
Definitely a good one to watch on bluray.
Make sure you are clear before bidding if it includes a digital copy also!!!!

Underrated

Movie has its creepy moments but of course isn’t as scary as the original

Awful And Should Not Be Seen

Some movies just never need to be remade and the NOES remake is a perfect example! The original was a complete and utter masterpiece and this remake was insulting to say the very least. If you are reading this and did not see the original, do yourself a huge favor and go buy it. I wish I never even saw this remake as it has now somewhat tarnished my view on the series. Shame on you Bob Shaye!Read full review...

Freddy and the visuals carry the whole movie.

well the acting for most of the young actors is pretty bad but Freddy is the star of the film and he is portrayed just fine. this is a good starting point for the series if they choose to make more but nothing above that. Freddy is underused but the movie itself is enjoyable mainly because of him and the visuals.Read full review...
