A new vision of Superman

I bought this because I have some of the issues but could not find the missing ones to complete the story line. I also love the Absolute Editions of the comics; they include a lot of cool extras [including background information, original artwork, and commentaries as to what the author and artist were thinking. Totally cool!

I loved the artwork. It was incredible. The storyline was interesting. Supes created a device to save the world and then gives himself forced amnesia. Then something happens and millions disappear, including Lois Lane. He then has to figure out what happened to all the missing people. It held my attention [although it did seem to get a little long in the tooth at some points].

I thought it interesting, as well, how they integrated a man of the cloth and his crisis of faith and how he saw Superman. Most of the times it seems like religious people are portrayed as simpletons or complete wackadoos without any regard that there is a wide spectrum in between. It was refreshing to see a man of the cloth portrayed in a relatively positive manner. I commend them for this; it can be a hard thing. I do not necessarily agree with the conclusions they had the minister come to, but that is okay. I still thought they did a good job overall.

The artwork. I loved it. It was totally incredible. I can't stand the way a lot of comics art is moving towards these days; it seems like a lot of artists just slap stuff together and call it 'art' for the comic they are working on. The characters are hard to recognize; people do not look like people. This type of artwork can keep me from buying an issue or graphic novel because the art is just as important as the story. Great artwork can help overcome a weak storyline; horrible artwork can kill a great storyline. And this story had incredible artwork. Superman looked larger than life while looking subdued at the same time. It was well done.

I thought it was a well-written, well-crafted story line that held my interest the entire length of the book.
