Could have been the next Mass Effect

Alpha Protocol is a great game that suffered from being released without being polished. It had many bugs that have since been patched and it still suffers from poor AI, occasional camera issues and some framerate slowdown but overall this game had potential and could have been the first in a series of incredible games like we see in the mass effect series.

AP is actually alot like Mass Effect. So if you liked Mass Effect give this game a try. There's a lot of choice that effects how the game plays out. It has a lot of variety to the missions that I find to actually be better than Mass Effect's missions. Except for the boss missions, these guys are super human and will frustrate you to the point of turning the game off. (hint: most are weak to flashbangs and shock bombs but still annoying) Mass Effect has the whole squad thing going for it where as AP mostly has you tackling missions alone. It uses the Unreal engine and looks quite nice IMO. There are also some tweeks you can search on google to make it look even better if you want. I can play the game on an old PC with a 3.2 P4, nvidia 9500 gt w/ 2 gb of ram and it works fine.

Here's a couple things to try for the PC version that I found helps improve the game.

(Make a copy in the same folder of the files, APEngine.ini and APGame.ini so you can go back to original settings if you have any problems)

To improve the framerate issue:

Open "APEngine.ini" located at "DocumentsAlpha ProtocolAPEngineConfig" and change the following:

UseBackgroundLevelStreaming=false
OnlyStreamInTextures=true
OneFrameThreadLag=False

To improve Michaels Movement. This slows the turning speed and slows the animation when crouched ect. I really felt it helped improve the games controls.

"APGame.ini" located at "DocumentsAlpha ProtocolAPGameConfig" and change the following:

InteractDistance=250
CoverWalkSpeed=75.f
CoverRunSpeed=125.f
PlayerRotationSpeed=80000.0f
MoveSpeedNormal=240
MoveSpeedScoped=80
SprintSpeed=320

Its a shame that the game didn't get fine tuned before release because I think it was a good start to a great franchise. Unfortunately the game was released as a buggy mess and deserved the low review scores it got.
Even though it plays fine since it was patched and works even better with these tweeks, its just too late to reverse the bad reputation it has. 7 out of 10

Adventure/RPG first, FPS/stealth second...underrated fun

I fully agree with the other reviewers who said this game was underrated by the "official" reviews.

It is a great RPG, with excellent character progression, intriguing story, excellent voice acting (some of the best I've heard in a video game in some time), and a great sense that your choices have an impact on the outcome of the adventure.

The letdown for some came from the fact that, no, the FPS aspect of the game is not quite up to par with many games whose primary focus is FPS (Far Cry, Bioshock, GoW etc). But if one thinks of this as an adventure/RPG with FPS elements, I think you'll see what the devs had in mind. Moreover, I thought that the level design was actually quite good, with multiple legitimate ways of completing virtually all of the missions.

It is also a bit short for an RPG, and I can see where it could have been more "fleshed out" in parts (some story elements remain undeveloped, depending on paths you take, and at times the plot becomes a bit convoluted). But the length and divergent paths, combined with the possibility of multiple playstyles, give it good replayability.

Overall: Sure, it could be better, but still a rocking good time. Far superior to the vastly overrated Mass Effect 2 (where the idea of a "story" is spending 90% of the game assembling a team for the very short final mission). A-

Amazing game!

I held off on buying this for a while because it got really bad reviews, but after playing it at a friend's house I figured it was worth picking up. I've since played through it a total of 3 times (at 15-20 hours per playthrough) -- it's an amazing game! Yeah, it's got an annoying camera glitch (do some googling to figure out how to fix it), but the stealth elements are loads of fun, the combat is great, and basically no matter how you develop your character, you finish the game feeling like a totally unstoppable badass.

Don't buy this game if you're looking for the next Gears of War/other third-person action/shooter. That's not what this is.

Do buy this game if you like games in which your character gets more powerful over the course of the game, games that involve lots of sneaking around and taking out unsuspecting guards, and games with complex stories that your choices actually affect.

Fun and addictive, I definitely recommend it!

Alpha Protocol-

Here is a good example of a game with ltos of deep thought behind it.
Deep and compelling story with lots of twists and turns.
More options than most in the wannabe RPG games with a spin on consequence for ones actions.
I really enjoyed the storyline system and the different twists and spins that one can use through conversation manipulation. It gave a good illusion of actually having an impact on what's going on. After playing through various parts and trying different options and choices, the story pretty much remains the same through most of the game.
The action sequences were nice and the interactions with well developed npc personalities was also refreshing.
Well worth the money spent.
Anyone who enjoys the FPS, action, spy genres should enjoy this game.

Loved it.

I had this product and bought it for a birthday present for a friend. This was a fun action game with so many different ways to play it. I liked the game and have beat it 5 times.
The story changes on who you trust and who you kill, my first and second time through were very different just based on that alone. If you get this game and like it I can tell you after you finish you will want to play it again to see what changes you could have made.
I give this game a 10/10 I've beat it 5 times and haven't had any glitches or errors. Its on my list for top 5 best games.

Great game!!

Love this game even though some places like Gamespot only gave it a 6.0. The way that you can build your character and approach any situation is really great and fun to do. I chose to go commando with guns blazing and maybe next time I may appraoach stealth style. I highly recommend this game!Read full review...
