Amazon Kindle Keyboard 4GB, Wi-Fi + 3G (Unlocked)

I was a satisfied early adopter of the Kindle, who happily adopted the Kindle 2, and was eager to acquire this latest version of the Kindle as soon as it became available. The Kindle's key strengths remain the same: easy-to-read e-ink grayscale screen, adjustable type size, a broad range of reasonably priced books, magazine, newspapers, and blogs to purchase, the ability to quickly download these resources directly to the device virtually anywhere and any time (but also accessible via your personal computer if you so prefer), large storage capacity, and the ability to archive at no additional cost all the titles you've finished reading but might want to access again some time in the future.

The Kindle is truly designed for people who love to read, who enjoy engaging with texts, stories, and ideas more than they love grazing for information, gossip, and images. While the iPad has certain features (color screen, multiple apps, video, color images) that likely appeal to people who consume lifestyle magazines, it is still basically a computer--cumbersome to carry, tiring to hold, difficult to read in sunlight, and prone to causing eye strain with prolonged use...and expensive.

This review is primarily directed to owners of the Kindle 1 and 2 who are contemplating migration to the latest version. My recommendation is: Go for it! (Moving your library to the new device is a breeze.)

Physical improvements: The latest Kindle is smaller and lighter, but the screen is the same size. It's easier to hold. Also, the device (like the Kindle 1) has a rubber backing so it won't slip off you lap. The navigation controls are more like those on a TV remote and easy to use. The page forward and backward buttons (one of each on both sides of the device so as not to favor right-handed folks over their sinister brethren) are thinner and silent. I'm still getting used to these. Based on the way I hold the device when I'm reading, I would rather the forward button were on top (because that's where my thumb naturally falls); what would be ideal would be to be able to program these buttons from the settings screen based on personal preferences. I would also prefer it if the power cord attached from the top or right side of the Kindle rather than from the bottom. (The problem being that if you are reading while the device is recharging, the cord tends to get caught in your clothing.)

Managing your library. The more titles you acquire, the more you are going to want to group them into meaningful collections. This is extremely easy to do. And because archived items are so easy to re-import, you can reduce the number of titles on your Home screen even further. The Reader for readers.

Very worthwhile e-reader.

The Kindle can put an entire library in your hands in a very small package. The user interface is so simple that for most people it will not require looking at the instruction sheet. Charging is simple with the supplied USB/mains cable. Opening an account with Amazon is fast and easy. Amazon's library is huge and there are a large number of very worthwhile books for free. I am a long term lover of printed books and always will be but the Kindle adds a new dimension to reading with its portability. In addition, if you are near a Wi-Fi or 3G setup you can quickly get online and order a book. The only accessories I have for mine are a folding protective cover and a reading light that clips on. Battery life is measured in weeks instead of minutes or hours. The Kindle also has other noteworthy features such as changable type sizes, horizontal or vertical orientation, a customizable filing system and apps such as a calendar, periodic table of the elements, a universal unit conversion and others. You can also subscribe to periodicals such as the New York Times or many different magazines. All these can also be purchased as single issues for a very reasonable cost.

This is a very worthwhile handheld device for travlers, students and avid readers of any sort.

The Best Non-Touchscreen Kindle E-Reader

As my title says I consider it the best of the non-touchscreen kindle readers. It was the first 6" screen Kindles to have 4 Gigs of memory. It was also available with both Wi-Fi and 3G communications capability as an option and was the first to have the E-Ink Pearl screen which had better contrast and 16 grey scale levels. The hardware keyboard was much more convenient than the on screen keyboard on the D01100 generation 4 and 5 units which also did not have touch screens. making keyboard operation a pain.

It also has the advantage of still having many accessories and covers available for it from both ebay and Amazon sources while the prior generation Kindle 2 does not. Based on my own buying experience good condition used units are available for prices in the $50 to $60 range with the ones offering both wi-fi and 3G communications bringing a bit of a premium price. Overall it does the job and is reasonably priced.

The Kindle Keyboard reader - proven technology that works without hassle!

After wanting a tablet computer, but not able to decide which one - I decided to try a "basic" reader. After doing some research, I wanted to go with an Amazon product with 3G and a keyboard. The ability to play audiobooks and text to speech was just as important. I also wanted storage to hold more than few books, so there really was only one option - the Kindle Keyboard w/4GB storage and 3G.

All the praise this device has been given is totally on target. It just works. No fuss, no hassle, and I'm able to hold and operate it with one hand (left or right). I'm also a page flipper - often going back to re-read or recheck something. The forward/backward buttons are logically placed and work quickly.

I recently was on a 5 hour flight, and I easily spent half the time reading. Battery life is as good as advertised, and once charged you can go weeks without worrying about power.

My only complaint is that I wish the built in web browser was quicker and didn't give so many "site page can't be read" errors, but it has no problem with the Amazon site (ha - no surprise there!)

Amazon Delivers An Excellent Product With Their Kindle Wi-Fi 3G! Fantastic!

I bought this Kindle so that I could have 2! I wanted to be able to have one Kindle to store my books, and have the other one so that I could read several books at one time.
I absolutely LOVE this product. I don't think I would even consider a NOOK, even if someone gave me one for free.
I think that I got an absolutely fantastic product for an unbeatable price, when I got my second Kindle. I paid full price for the first Kindle, and finally decided to use my noggin when I purchased my second one, by going to E-Bay to see what was available.
I believe that the first owner of this particular Kindle was not as avid a reader as I am, or they were raised to take care of what they had growing up, because the product was in mint condition.
I strongly recommend if a future Kindle owner does not have access to internet service, as myself due to geographic constrictions, to purchase a Kindle with the 3G capability. I have no problem whatsoever getting books to download where I live, even though I can't get cell phone service (Go figure, Verizon, "Can you hear me now?")
Amazon has a very good product with this Kindle. If you are going to use this for just reading, and playing the simple games, this would get the "most bang for your buck".
I give it a 5/5 rating.

Great purchase

I bought this as a back up ereader for when I am on vacation ( since my kindle paperwhite fell in the pool last time I was on vacation and I was left with nothing "I wanted" to read for the rest of my trip. This kindle keyboard reads as easily as my paper white kindle used to read , it's easy to see in bright sun and the battery life is really good too. It is not a touch screen, so it takes a little while to get used to that, but other than that, it is a perfectly nice ereader.Read full review...

Best purchase I have ever made!

I purchased this item in order to replace my Kindle Keyboard since my screen cracked and I am so glad I did! There is nothing I disk=like about the Kindle Keyboard the battery life lasts forever if you keep the wifi off, there is zero glare which is perfect since I love to read on the beach, it fits in my purse so I always have it on me and the text to audio is great while on the go since I get car sick!
No other Kindle has this feature. Thank you!

Awesome product and vewry reasonably priced!

I have been using my Amazon Kindle Keyboard with 4G and Wi-Fi unlocked 6in. ebook reader forover a month and love it! It's not a touch screen ebook reader. I like it if though. I have shopped on line for a few ebooks and downloaded one at the moment. The batter life is exceptionally long due to the type of ink used for the screen which uses very little power. I'm very satisfied with the purchased and the ease of use.Read full review...
