As an owner of a few different ampeg heads and cabinets, to me, the svt-3 sounds pretty close to my 90s svt classic. I find the svt-3 to be perfect for a loud 5 piece band for rehersals, and small gigs. This svt-3 also includes without breaking the bank, and breaking your back while trasnporting it. And if 450w at 4 ohms of power is not enough for big gigs, you can always add a good quality power amp of any size, and still have one of the best ampeg preamps that will deliver that highly sought after, killer rock tones through any quality bass cabinet. Solid Ampeg tone in a clean package Lots of ways to find tone you're after

I had heard about this amp from other friends and bassists I know and did some research. I never got a chance to play it before buying but I'm still happy with the way it sounds. You can get some pretty cool tone variations with this beast, but unfortunately it doesn't have as much power as other similarly-priced heads. You do get a nice volume boost with the gain cranked up, but be aware that it will give your bass an incredible sounding "grinding" style of tone that might not suit your musical tastes.
Other features I like are the Bright switch which works well with my Fender Jazz that gives a nice boost to the mids and trebles. I'm currently running it through an Ampeg PN210 and it's able to put out a nice range from high to low. I will say though that with this cab, the lows don't quite have the punch I'm looking for so I'm currently considering adding a 4x10 sealed cab to the rig to add both more volume and the solid lows I crave.
The head was in outstanding physical condition so my hat's off to the seller for keeping such good care of it. I'm not sure if I'm hearing this correctly, but I do get a bit of a buzz/ringing noise and I suspect it might be that a tube is going out. I'll have to get it looked at, but was something I was prepared to do since I was buying it used.
Overall, it was a good purchase and I'd recommend this head to any bassist looking for something that can give you clean, tuby sounding tones or even metal guys looking for that sharp, grinding sound you've always wanted. The Perfect Stage amp

Just an awesome amp. Especially for the stage. EQ is a huge plus and full of fabled tubes. A true hybrid. This is my second purchase of said amp. SVT 3 Pro review

For me, this is a backup head. My main amp is the all tube 300 watt SVT Classic.
