Good adaptation, though not as powerful as the book it's based on

I bought this movie because I recently finished reading the book it was based on, which made a huge impression on me. I am also a fan of both Denzel Washington and Derek Luke, so buying this was an easy decision.

Overall, the movie is very good. It's not as powerful as the book was (which movies ever are?) but it's done well. I'm glad I watched it.

By far, the best part of the DVD was getting to see and hear the real Antwone Fisher. No matter how good any actor is, it's not as powerful as seeing the "real" person they portrayed. The real Antwone Fisher impressed me all the more because we could see and hear for ourselves that expressing himself ISN'T second nature to him - he works hard to express himself. Denzel, Shining Star

This true story was very touching about the hardships of a young Black Male's troubled life until he met a caring Navy Lawyer who did more than psycho analyze him. He took him into his family where he turned the young man around to re-claim his life & develop his career. In the film, Antwone's girl friend also helped him with his struggles Denzel Washington not only starred as the Naval officer but also directed this very well made film. Based on a true story, a biographical drama centering upon Antwone "Fish" Fisher who--once a Sony Pictures security guard--eventually gained fame as an acclaimed writer and a Hollywood producer. In the earlier part of his life, he was a sailor prone to violent outbursts. On the verge of being kicked out of the Navy for repeated fighting, he is sent to a naval psychiatrist for help.
