The House on the Cliff by Franklin W. Dixon, 1927

Note: This review is for the Applewood reprint of the original 1927 version.

"The House On the Cliff" is a great book, one of the original classic Hardy Boys Stories that launched the series. The second book in the series, The House on the Cliff is a detective mystery story that features the Hardy Boys, (two teenage detectives) and their friends. The plot deals with smugglers, haunted houses, and the disappearance of the Hardy's famous detective father. The book is just fantastically written. It inter-weaves humorous parts that show young men having good clean fun with their friends, with a gripping plot that keeps the reader on the edge of his seat. Each chapter leaves the reader hanging and it is not easy to put the book down once one starts to read it. The story line builds and builds to a suspenseful, explosive ending.

I would highly recommend this book for any young reader, boy or girl. In fact, I read this book and other Hardy Boys books to my son when he was four years old. My plan was to read one chapter each night before bed but he would want me to read another and another. It got to the point that we had to turn the lights off and read with a flashlight so that my wife would not get upset when she came home from work and found my son still awake (when we heard her coming in the door, we would make believe that we were asleep). Also, my son learned about Roman numerals from the books (the chapter numbers are written in Roman numerals) and he proceeded to freak out his K4 teacher by drawing her a picture of a clock with Roman numerals).

One last thing; this early 1927 version should in no way be confused with the later 1959 version. The 1959 version has a drastically different story line, was written by a different author (all of the books were written by “ghost writers” under the name of Franklin W. Dixon), and was arbitrarily shorted (by 33 pages) to lower the cost of the book. In the case of this Hardy Boys Book, older is definitely better!
