Excellent series!
The first season of Avatar: The last airbender concentrates on introducing characters. It's vital to enjoy the other two seasons which are just amazing. The first watch of Avatar: The Last Airbender was charming, though, to me, many of the episodes didn't seem to really be all that cohesive.
A brief synopsis: It focuses on the protagonist of the story, Aang, the last of his kind (each nation controls an element- Water, Earth, Fire or Air). Aang was frozen for 100 years and is discovered by the other two main characters (brother and sister) who are out fishing in an icy climate. Aang is the Avatar, a powerful person who can control ALL FOUR elements reincarnating in each generation, being born into each sequential element through-out the years, in order to bring peace and balance to all of the nations.
The problem is, While the Avatar was frozen for 100 years, the fire nation decided to become all-powerful and rule over all of the other elements-- destroying the entire population of the "air" people and leaving many other places in ruins. Aang's journey begins with Katara and her brother Sokka as they go on a quest for Aang to continue his training so that he can defeat the fire lord and bring peace back to the world.
The first season seems to stall a bit in the middle, as they had a set course to get to a destination at the end of the season. So, basically, they travel to each village and begin to start bringing order to each town, meeting different characters in each episode. There's some really cool "fight" scenes, where the characters all use their elements to battle. Aang is also being pursued by the banished Prince of the fire nation- who believes he will be welcomed home with his honor returned to him if he brings the Avatar to his father, the fire lord. There's a lot of witty laugh-out-loud dialogue and amusing situations, as well as great character development. It's beautifully animated and has a very good story.
The second season and the last season become far more complex, compelling and serialized than the first. That's not to say that the first season is not valuable or entertaining. Avatar is what the name implies: Everything at once in a kid's show
This series is one of the best around. It has great humor, action, and deals with serious issues at the same time: all within a great balance. This show has instant classic written all over it. The story of Avatar is well written and is quite worth watching over and over again. This DVD set is the begining of the series and gives way to the rest of the seasons. The show has very memoralbe characters that easily appeal to a vast audience including men & women, boy & girl.
If you watched the live-action movie based on this series, it is very well noted that the series is WAY better and worth checking out.
The series also gives the audience a good glimpse at some of the South East Asian cultures (though mixed and remade unique). This is a great simple experience into other cultures while still being rooted in a Western way so that all can understand. It tells the story of the Avatar who has the ability to master all the 4 elements (of which only the Avatar can master). The Avatar's mission is to protect the world and bring peace. This series tells how one such Avatar is frozen literally in time for 100 years while the sinsister and evil Fire Nation begins a war and tries to take over the world in the Avatar's absense. The Avatar is actually found after the 100 years and is awakened, still as a 12 year old boy who has a lot to learn about being the Avatar.
This show is great for adults too. C.S. Lewis once stated that a childrens' story in which only children enjoy is not a very good childrens' story [paraphrasing of course].
This is a must buy for those who love the show. It is well worth owning to watch again and again (especially if you have the other 2 seasons). The entire series is amazing and one of my all time favorites hands down.Read full review...
Avatar: The Last Airbender
I love this series because it tells a great story. It's family-friendly with good moral lessons and, while it's geared toward kids, I'm 27 and still found it entertaining.
One of the heroes of the story (my favorite character) Katara is strong and smart- a perfect role-model for girls. She challenges her culture to accept women waterbenders as equals and never turns her back on people who need her help. The other girl-hero is Toph, a blind girl who overcomes her disability and become a master earthbender. Sokka, Katara's little brother, isn't a bender like the others but he becomes a master of the sword to protect them all. Avatar Ang-the only person who can master all elements and stop a war- is only a small boy who has far to go and much to learn.
There is plenty of humor and action throughout the whole series as the young heroes travel through towns, helping when they can and seeking out teachers for Ang. I highly recommend it especially if you like: fantasy (feudal japan-style) and/or most animated disney stuff.Read full review...
A great family series where the good guys win.
Not only is this series very well made with excellent character development, plenty of action, drama, and comedy but it has great depth, especially for a show that is meant to be a childrens cartoon.<br>
All of the characters are extremely expressive, sometimes in an obviously intentional exaggerated fashion. All of the characters have strong personalities. The good characters are very human, with human faults and challenges and sometimes even an occasional evil thought or action. The evil characters are also very human with human emotions, weaknesses and occasionally, even compassion and remorse. Although the characters are not just black or white in character they all will suffer the consequences of their actions and/or receive rewards for their efforts, integrity and bravery. One can feel sorry for the evil characters but still realize their punishment is just and necessary. Avatar's characters teach that although it is best to be peaceful, kind and compassionate there are times when one must be willing to give up peace to protect themselves and the ones they love. They also teach tolerance of others and of ones own weaknesses no matter how strange they may be.
I recommend this series for anyone whether you have children or not. It is developed enough to entertain adults yet is a great show for children. Not only safe for them to watch, providing good lessons about people and life, but great fun for them as well. There is plenty of humor and fun for children and yet has plenty of fun geared toward the adults.

Avatar: Animation at Its Best for All Ages
Avatar The Last Airbender revolves around one boy's quest to become The Avatar. A single person who can command all four elements of water, earth, fire and air. The Avatar keeps the balance in the world between The Fire Nation, Water Tribe, Earth Kingdom and the Air Nomads.
Everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked. Only the Avatar could stop them and maintain the balance. But When the world needed him the most, he vanished. 100 years passed, The Fire Nation is on the brink of victory with little to stand in their way. But When Sokka and Katara discover the new Avatar frozen within an iceberg, hope returns.
This show has everything you would like in a show. Drama, twists, and heavy action sequences. The series lasts a mere 61 episodes and you'll be left wanting more. I recommend this to anyone who would like to see animation at its best. This is one of my favorite shows of all time.Read full review...
Avatar the Last Airbender Book 1 is a must own!
The Last Airbender is an awesome story that captures hearts of adults and children. I haven't met a single person who disliked this show. It's funny, has action, romance, a great story line, and best of all, a morals that parents can be proud of.
The animiation is wonderful and the voice acting is perfect. The storyline is origional and the characters mean something to you by the end of the show.
The 1st Book also contains extra stuff about the show, including showing the martial arts used for each form of bending. It's really interesting stuff especially for an avid fan.
I seriously recomend this show to anyone who wants/needs a good escape into a wholesome world where their imagination can run wild.Read full review...

I absolutely love this series!!! Though it is quite cartoonish and goofy at times, the plot is complex and intriguing, and the characters are endearing and show a great amount of growth throughout the three books. Do not be waylaid by the recent production of "Avatar: The Last Airbender" that was so badly received by the general public. It doesn't even scratch the surface of this deep story, and it was not very well acted on more than one occasion. This original version is much better. I got it for my little brother, but I enjoyed it just as much as he did. An excellent choice for the young and not-so-young alike. Good for rainy Saturdays :).Read full review...
Great story, good for kids and adults!
So I didn't start watching Avatar until the second season. My 4yr-old son, my fiancee and I love the program. So I decided to buy season 1 for my son(and us) for Christmas so we could catch up on the story. We all loved it and it is great for my son.(no commercials; he has no attention span) My fiancee and I loved the extra disc which is all extras. It cool to see how they made it and see the actors who voice the characters. My fiancee and I acually sat down and watched it in one evening. That was a very late night. Well anyway, if you like the show I highly recommend buying the box set. I can't wait until season 2 comes out; I will definately be buying that.

Excellent show, family friendly, full of humor!
My husband likes anime and had seen an episode of Avatar on TV. He really enjoyed it so I bought him the first "book" of Avatar for Christmas. I ended up watching it with him, enjoying it very much. It is actually kid-friendly, unlike so many cartoons that are out there, and adults can enjoy it too thanks to it's humor, action and all out fun. We are eagerly waiting for the second book. This is something we will share with out two year old son when he is old enough to enjoy cartoons, and we highly recomend it for anyone with children who enjoy cartoons, especially ones that get carried away with too much violence. Avatar has fighting in it, but there is always a sense of honor and I feel the show helps teach about doing what is right.Read full review...
Avatar is simply the best and can not beat!
I was hooked the first episode I ever saw.
I still love watching saturday morning cartoons and right now there is nothing like what I used to watch in the 80's. I felt hard pressed to find a cartoon now days that I could watch with my three year old.
I watched it for the first time just to see what it was that she found on a cartoon chanel, she loved it and I sat down to watch the next day on tivo! She can recite the openning theme word for word. It has a good story line, wonderfully written characters. It is funny, fun to watch, and keeps you coming back. I recomend for the whole family!Read full review...
