This is one of the best compact systems for the money.

I needed a mobile 8 track to capture ideas on the fly. Prior to this, I had been working with a stand alone hard disk recorder in my studio. That studio has now been condensed to a carry on suitcase and I missed not being able to just push record and go. Plus, recording to a laptop wasn't working either. The Boss-600 has been able to replace my old need of a stand alone and still fits in the carry on. I can upload to a laptop later for further editing.
The 600 is the older model, but reviewers were saying it still had better capabilities than the 2010 model, so I trusted my gut. An older model means less money out of my pocket, as well.
The 1gig compact flash memory cards were a concern of mine, but I tried a cheap generic card that works great. Get a generic card before you spend lots of money on a name brand.
Manual is easy to read, but I'm used to struggling through bad manuals with my past stand alone recorders. If this is your first attempt at 8 track recording, you will have challenges. But the user groups on the internet will get you through it.
Recording sounded clearer than what I was expecting. Exporting/Importing via the USB was a snap. I'm really happy with this purchase.
I read reviews before buying and since recieving I've recorded a live practice and use mainly for songwriting purposes. Very easy to use and the onboard guitar amp simulators sound great along with the effects. I'm still learning the machine and look forward to creating lots of music and getting into the mastering of songs.

Good machine in it's day

This unit is small. self-contained, and a very useful tool for beginners who want to learn how to record in multi-track environments. The manual is thorough, and I would suggest a read prior to working with the until if you are new to recording. The COSM features are nice additions for effects, though I prefer to use outboard effects. This is an older device which has been superceded by better, newer technology, but serves as a good entry point. I wish they had made the recording media SD instead of CF cards. It will not accept anything over 1GB and should be a 48x or smaller speed. Overall a good entry-level 4 track recorder.Read full review...

Boss BR-600 Digital Recording Console

This recorder is my favorite learning tool for music. I record the songs I am learning, and then use the A-B repeat function to play the difficult phrases over and over until I get them figured out, or in the case of our originals, until I get my leads dialed in. The Phrase Trainer feature allows me to cut the speed of the music in half without changing the pitch, so I can learn the phrases at a slower speed in the original key.

The BR-600 is very easy to learn, and easy to use. My band records every practice session, using just the internal microphones, and the results are surprisingly listenable. I just use one track for these sessions, which gives me hours of recording time on a 1GB card.

This little featherweight will operate on batteries with around six hours of recording time on a set of alkalines. It makes it nice for use at a live performance, or even a college lecture.

For recording multi-track songs, there are some very useable effects on board, as well as a pretty darn good drum machine with some fun rhythm tracks. The final quality of the music, using no other gear is really excellent, especially considering the reasonable cost of the machine.

You won't regret this purchase--I would immediately have to buy another one if mine got broken or lost.

When I want demo quality recording, I just plug in a good pair of recording microphones, and use two tracks for the recording; or plug in the monitor out from our P.A. mixer into the line input, and one recording mic. This gives us

BR-600 makin' life rock

I was a little hesitant in getting this dgital recorder (technology scares me). I tried a computer program interface and really had a tough time with it. I'm glad to say that figuring this thing out isn't that bad. Although I wanted to start recording the very second I got it, I was patient. After about an hour of familiarizing myself with the unit and the the instruction book, I was ready to start playing with it.It didn't take too long before I had my first song down(2 guitar tracks, bass, drum machine). It was a little rough, but that was mostly my playing and getting used to actually recording myself. Overall this is an easy piece of gear to work with. The drum machine sounds good. The effects are usefull. It makes playing guitar fun as it fills out the sound of a complete song instead of one track live. It won't be long and I'll have music on a CD.Read full review...

Boss Audio Systems BR-600 Portable Digital Recorder

For a music hobbyist like myself this is a very handy unit to have. I use it as sketch pad for musical ideas, and once you acquaint yourself with the basic operation recordings can be made quickly, edited and mastered. Feature rich in effects for guitar, microphone and line input. Drum machine also has many stock patterns and beats that can be easily combined with with your work. Onboard microphones are quite good, and work well for acoustic instruments.
The unit is fussy about CF cards, so do your research and find one that are compatible with this. Seek out the older CF type 1 cards. Maximum size allow for CF card is 1 gigibyte, which I would have prefered to be larger, but this allows for several hours recording time in the highest quality mode. I do recommend finding a external power supply as battery life is only average. All in all I am quite pleased with my BR-600

Very happy with this device.

I am an amateur musician and sort-of song writer. I wanted a device that I could record a rhythm track with my guitar and then practice a lead over the top. I also wanted something to record an actual composed song with numerous tracks. I previously owned the BR 8 and was quite happy with it, but I wanted something a little more portable that could operate on batteries (this device also operates on an electric power supply) and had built in mics. And, I didn't want to pay an arm and a leg. The BR 600 was what I choose to replace the BR 8 and I've been very happy with my choice. I've owned it for several months. While I prefer recording with an external mic (and I can do that with this machine), having the ability to just hit a button and record on the fly using the built in mics is a great option. I also like having built in drum sounds. There are aspects of the BR 600 that are not as intuitive as I found the BR 8 to be. Especially relative to rhythm/drum tracks. But, it has just taken a little more study time with the owner's manual and watching some videos I found online to figure it out. The sound is recorded onto a Flash Card. My unit came with a 128 meg card, but that filled up pretty quickly so I also purchased a couple extra 1 gig cards online. The cards are not abundant but can be found on the internet. The largest card the machine will accommodate is one gig. I tried a 2 gig card and it would not work. So far one gig seems to be plenty for my purposes but, if I stored a lot of completed songs on my device, I would need several disks. The ability to "bounce" tracks onto one master track and them upload that to my computer is fairly easy and results in a nice finished product that can be loaded from my computer to my music player. So, unless I want the ability to remix a song later, recordings can be easily saved and stored on my computer. If you are looking for an affordable recording device that will work well for practice as well as to make some great professional sounding song recordings, this would be a great choice.Read full review...

Boss BR-600 Multi Track Recorder

The Br-600 is a great little unit. It is versatile, pretty easy to use, the effects are very similar to what you get on most of the newer boss units.. The condenser mics in front are excellent.. The documentation is well done. The unit is small but packs a big punch as far as what you can do with it. It does not have midi connections however, hence the rating of 4 as opposed to 5, but other than that is is a good unit, and if you can get one used for 50% less that retail it is well worth it, especially considering that some of the new loopers & trainer units and smaller recorders out now are nowhere near as versatile. This thing is smaller than a 8/12x11 sheet of paper and about as thick as a 300 page paperback.Read full review...

Boss is boss

portability, versatility , quality, I have used Br consoles before. The BR 600 is a songwriters tool to effectivly create demos and multi track ideas, for a full production sound, with out the pricetag. The interface takes a little getting used to, once mastered you can create awesome cd quality recordings.

The stereo built in condenser mics are solid. I would recomend this unit for acoustic singer songwriters, as well as garage, or punk bands who cant afford studio time. My unit will pay for itself within 2 songs.

thanks boss! Saille Branch,

Boss br 600,, Awesome !!

Ok 1st thing, I aint no rocket scientist. I couldnt figure out how to program the dr ryhthym dr5 boss drum machine ok ??? LOL !! But when I got boss br-600 and read the manual and with a lil time I DID learn to program the drums on the BR 600. Ok what Im tryin to say is, This lil awesome machine is very ez to get the hang of. Drums sound as good as sum stand alone drum machines. Simular sound as the boss dr5. The only complaints would be, very sensitive inputs, U have to turn the knob down almost all the way to keep from peekin out on strong signals, no biggie just watch your levels. Lots of adjustments needed on sound effects. But with time you can get sum kewl sounds. Only 1 gb flash cards, But thats enough to hold about 5 or 6 songs with about 5 or 6 tracks each., Oh well buy more cards heee. And last lil argument would be that this is really a 6 track recorder with the last 2 track beind stereo tracks, Again with bouncing and virtual tracks no biggie. Im really impressed about how small this lil baby is. You will be too. Overall its a aesome piece of equipment every musician should own, Its ez to transport your recording to computer via usb cable.Read full review...

Old Guy Recording

I've tried several recorders over the years and the Boss is by far the most user friendly. It also does a great job at what it was designed for, and that's recording.
