Caution when buying Back to Black on vinyl

I prefer vinyl albums to CDs and was happy I could get Back to Black in vinyl. What a disappointment this album is--not Amy Winehouse's singing, but the sound quality of the vinyl (Back to Black, Republic Records, copyright 2006, UPC # 602517341296; album shrink wrap has a "Made in Canada" sticker on it but I assume it's the same as the US pressing of that year). The only way I can think to describe it is that the music sounds almost muffled, as if you're standing outside a building listening to a concert going on inside. The thumping of the bass is clear, but the nuances and dynamic range of Winehouse's voice aren't captured by the recording at all. Some tracks sound okay, but quite a few sound really poor. A number of reviewers (on websites that I didn't check out until after I purchased the album, unfortunately) complained about the compression of the album--I think that's what I was hearing. Winehouse's voice doesn't sound full at all--the poor sound quality makes her sound like an average singer, not the phenomenal talent that she was. This vinyl doesn't do her voice justice at all. Supposedly there's an album put out by Abbey Road studios that is good quality, but I would suggest anyone thinking of buying Amy Winehouse on vinyl should check out reviews of the sound quality of any album before buying it. Great rhythm, blues and soul.

The album recording is very smooth, not digital sounding just full of talent. The bass drums had a distorted presentation in a few tracks and I was thinking could it be dirt or a bad press or maybe a digital remastering issue but no its just engineered distorted for the ambiance. The only concern I had overval was this album arrived very dirty, the most white particles both sides and fluff of all albums I have picked up recently. The paper sleeve was not causing it. Was it a dirty manufacturing warehouse? Where did this white stuff come from? Be prepared to brush a lot and wash. Pressing is very good, very clear recording, no skips, tics or pops, deep bass, sharp vocals, hole centered, perfect shape, only a very slight warp that can be removed laying flat after a warm bath in a ultrasonic cleaning, put in a sleeve and lay a thin 12x12 piece of glass on top. One of my all time favorites.

Great album from Amy Winehouse. Arguably, one of the best sounding albums from a gifted artist. The recording is top notch, as is the voice, arrangements, style and originality.

Smooth and easy on my ears and pockets

It may have taken a few days to get it to me by mail but it was worth it. I can't wait to buy the next classic LP.
