Classic FunFest !!

'Balls of Fury' is a purgatory-pleasure of absurd, borderline offensive fun that will have you laughing and gasping in offended-comic schlock at the same time !! Christopher Walken provides yet another opportunity to ply his eccentric shtick as the Villain set in the "Cutthroat World of Ping-Pong". - Yes, "Ping-Pong !! Feel the smiles starting on your faces; they will only grow.
'Balls of Fury' represents a new hilarious attack in the gross-out comedy category following obscure low-grade sports & events; driven by talented casts for classic genre newcomers with laugh-spewing classics, like 'Dodgeball' and "Beerfest".
Walken provides some of many amusing moments in this film, "written" by Garant and Thomas Lennon, who previously installed 'Reno 911!: Miami' on us this year. Dressed like a garish cross between Elvis Presley and Fu Manchu; Walken plays Feng, a Ping-Pong loving Criminal Mastermind sought by FBI Agent Rodriguez (George Lopez), a desk jockey eager to make a name for himself in the Bureau.
To that end, Rodriguez enlists the reluctant aid of disgraced Ping-Pong Champion Randy Daytona (Dan Fogler), who's never recovered from his humiliating loss at the 1988 Summer Olympics to strutting German Player Karl Wolfschtagg (Lennon). Although Randy hasn't competed in years, he gets his "groove back", thanks to the grueling training regimen of blind Ping-Pong Master, Wong (James Hong). (These training sequences provide some side-hurting laughter; that may require the PAUSE button while you change your outfit "If You Get My Point").
Summoned to Feng's secret tropical lair to play in an Underground Ping-Pong Tournament; Randy faces the World's Best Players, including his old nemesis Karl, as he tries to foil Feng's evil plans.
Alums of MTV's The State sketch comedy series, Garant and Lennon carry the comic timing and ingenuity to sustain this feature-length film. 'Balls of Fury' lurches from one broad staged set piece to another as it crusades towards the loud and spectacularly carousing finale. The filmmakers aim for the lowest common denominator with crude regularity, which generates the hugest laughs. The actors never need to struggle in performing the comedy equivalent of CPR on 'Balls of Fury'.
Viewers inevitably come to love lissome Maggie Q, Fogler's love interest. A Tony Award Winner in his first feature film lead, it's great to see a beauty as poised as Q play her love scenes with Fogler's charm-free, corpulent beast (or hairy smurf) character.
All around; 'Balls of Fury' presents the copulent fun that requires no deep thought; just a will to laugh and smile. Proceed into the film with that at heart, and you are destined for the ride of a crude-swilling lifetime. A definate don't mis, that will sit amongst the classic comedy shelves; with other recent inductees like "Old School", "American Pie I, II, III", "Anchorman", "Dodgeball", "40-Year Old Virgin", "Knocked Up", "Superbad"....and more.

Balls of Fury (DVD, 2007, Widescreen)

I attended a preview screening of this movie in 2007 before it was publicly released and enjoyed it then. I bought it this summer primarily because I was going to be spending some time with James Hong and had enjoyed his performance as the blind ping pong master -- and also because it was available for a good price on eBay.

I'm not going to describe the plot in detail -- others have, and you can find all the details elsewhere. Suffice it to say that it is a parody of all those martial arts movies in which the hero has to overcome seemingly impossible odds to kill the person who killed his father. The big difference is that instead of Asian martial arts the form of combat in "Balls of Fury" is ping pong.

There are some surprises and unpredictable twists and turns in the action within the norms of the genre. Some I liked, some I didn't for various reasons, but fans of contemporary pop satires of popular genres can expect to enjoy this. I know I did.

I don't know if I would watch the added features (deleted scenes, an alternative ending, etc.,) more than once, but a added feature about a day in the life of the film's female "ball wrangler" was clever as broad PG-13 comedy.

(BTW, Hong told me that the scene where he sticks his chopsticks up Jason Scott Lee's nose, throws him down an elevator shaft and then resumes eating with the same chopsticks wasn't in the original script. He improved it when they were blocking the scene and the powers-that-be decided to use it.)

Balls of Fury

* Table tennis with the stylus works really well
* Battling the CPU is fun for a while
* Multiplayer mode lets you compete against your local friends
* You can play ping pong as Christopher Walken.

The Bad

* Graphics and audio don't exude much energy
* You may need to take advantage of multiplayer to feel you got your money's worth.

Game Details | About Our Rating System

Whether or not you enjoyed the recent motion picture, the video game rendition of Balls of Fury for the Nintendo DS is actually quite agreeable. The movie's goofy characters and lame story are merely window dressing for a table tennis game that's easy to pick up and quite a bit of fun.

Spanning the system's two screens is a vibrant, though plain representation of a ping pong table. Your opponents and their half of the table are shown on the upper screen, while your paddle and your half of the table occupy the lower touch screen. To play the game, you simply use the stylus to move the paddle around and, in turn, serve and return the ball toward your opponent.

The more you watch it, the funnier it gets.

Good cast, and very stupid, but funny! If you know the classic Bruce Lee movie "Enter the Dragon", it follows the theme closely. I loved it!

Previews looked like it might be a little funny. It was not.

I sometimes enjoy goofball comedies, and I really like Christopher Walken so I gave it a shot. It just came up short, and Chris couldn't save it either. I'd have been better off passing on this one.

Entertaing to say the least.

I like this movie alot. It is hilarious in some scenes and just so wrong in others. The plot line is interesting to keep the movie entertaining. The acting is great. It tells a story of a childhood hero turned into a joke, grown up and trying to avenge his fathers murder...kind of. I would recommend this movie if you enjoyed Dodgeball or any "spoof" type movies. Dragon without the Kung Fu

If you appreciate silly humor, Ping Pong and a little bit of Kung Fu, this movie is for you. It would help if you are also familiar with Bruce Lee movies. There are so many parallels, you can't help but laugh at how they make fun of the characters. Maggie Q acted wonderfully as "girl-friend, apprentice, and kung fu expert". This movie is a keeper. There are some parts that are not appropriate for little kids. Simply skip those part. Other than that, 85% is filled with humor, fun, and Ping-Pong!Read full review...
