Fun book to reinforce phonics and to teach the joy of reading.

I bought this--my third copy--for use in my ESL (English as a Second Language) classes, having recently rediscovered this book when my then four-year-old niece read (part of) it to me, with some help from me. It is a fun children's book that uses simple rhyming words in short lists and sentences in the context of funny color illustrations, as a clever way to practice phonics. My beginning ESL students--even middle school students and young adults--take an interest in this book because they can read it and understand it, with a little teacher guidance and the help of the color illustrations on each page. I consider it a welcome break from the regular phonics book I use in my classes, A Handbook for Reading (A Beka Book), which is great but somewhat monotonous.

Though this book is entertaining, it is a bit long, as it may take over 30 minutes for a beginning reader to read it aloud. A small child may get tired before finishing it, so it may be a good idea to read it in two phases.

This is my favorite Dr. Seuss Beginner Book at the moment. I have Dr. Seuss's ABC, but I found it to be less appropriate as a tool for practicing phonics and learning vocabulary at the beginning level. It's more of a book for adults (and older children) to read to small children; unlike Hop on Pop, it's not an "I Can Read it All by Myself" book. The Foot Book is suitable for beginning readers, though it is based on a more limited theme than Hop on Pop. There's a Wocket in my Pocket is a funny but nonsensical story full of made-up words that rhyme with words children would be familiar with. The description on the cover, "The simplest Seuss for youngest use" is quite fitting for Hop on Pop.

An easy first reader.

It was my children’s first book that they learned to read from . They loved the silly story as their grandfather went by the name PopPop, so it was very special to them.

Glad I found them!

This was such a good value buy. The books are in good condition, and I appreciate being able to get good quality copies of older books that are sometimes hard to find.
