Black Sails is an odd pot of gumbo to say the least but somehow it just seems to work. The premise is that the story is a prequel of sorts to Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island that blends historical figures like Calico Jack Rackham, Anne Bonney, Charles Vane, Woodes Rogers, and even Blackbeard with characters created by Stevenson—Captain Flint, Billy Bones and Long John Silver to create a tale that's as much about the closing days of the pirate era in the early 1700s as it is about how the titular treasure of Stevenson's novel came to be amassed and hidden. As such, it is not surprising that the narrative sometimes plays fast and loose with historical facts but still manages to create a thematically accurate and gripping look at a bygone era with plenty of violence, sex and intrigue to go around.Read full review...
