Sweet Nostalgia
This is one of my favorite books. Why? Because I love nostalgia. I love sunbonnets as well but I can be a bit snotty about it. I love Bertha Corbett's _original_ sunbonnet babies and I loved the sunbonnet girls that were in comics in the 1930's (no, I'm not quite that old but my grandmother was and clipped those, I have them in large scrapbooks along with myriad newspaper quilt patterns from KC Star and other places she collected from, family addiction, I can't help myself). What I _don't_ like are big globby generic sues with hands like frying pans and a hat that looks like an overturned urn. Blech. When it comes to sunbonnets it's all in the details. Which brings me to Helen R. Scott's Bonnet Girls.
This book is rife with detail from how to braid and style braids and buns to lamps, flowers, furniture, even a doggie to make every scene you create with these patterns uniquely yours. Lots of trims, ribbons, bits of lace as well which are always fun and not something I get to use enough of in quilting. That said this is largely a props and patterns book. There are a few brief instructions on various embroidery stitches but this should be approached, in my opinion, by the intermediate to advanced applique artist. Of course you could use the patterns with wonder-under (AAAAAAAAH-SCREAM-I told you I could be snotty) or a similar product and do a sort of fabric cut and paste, or iron, as it were. Whichever you choose (....choose the needle, choose the needle, wonder-under bad, needle good, you are getting sleepy, sleeeeeepy...)the charm is in the details and this book, in that respect, is overflowing.~Aunt_Melvernia~Read full review...
Bonnet Girls
I came across some individual patterns for the bonnet girls at an antique shop and bought about 15 of them. That night I researched these patterns on the internet and found there is actually over 150 individual patterns like the ones I found at the antique store, along with 2 companion books you can learn how to use these patterns and combine them in quilts. I was so excited about my “find” that day that I went back a few days later and bought the last 10 patterns that were left! Now I need to get some time to make these fun bonnet girls!!Read full review...
