Brother 1034D serger

PROS: First this is a sewing machine and a serger two in one. Quality is above average, simplicity to get in to sewing from "never used" to "feel comfortable" after watching videos provided on CDs are great and took a day. Good options like I liked and use only 2 or 2 out of 22 provided can't claim I used all of them.
Nice look and design. Comes with conveniently embedded all you need to start stitching out of the box, well just buy your set of threads. Nicely colored symbols for each thread, but should of put like sequence numbers for threading and textual labels alone with pictures. All that probably needed for beginners who is I am.
Reliability is great, just don't pull what you serging and if you bend or break needle have spare #14 to replace. The only issue faced was one of the threads wrapped around the thread bobbin holder caused high tension, but if used a correct size thread bobbins and install as manual suggests shouldn't be an issue.

CONS: plastic gets yellow after some time and it was white, now ugly yellow outside and nice and white inside. Grey would do better job.
Another one is flimsy telescopic thread guide stand could have better quality upper portion.
Bottom is made of plastic oppose to other Jenome steel made, gives extra stability
Belt got lose after not serious use of the machine.
All above cons are more like all details noticed and doesn't mean significant to a degree on decision to buy.

Generally we like the machine a lot, cute design but I wouldn't call it a workhorse. To conclude it's great for home use.

No Thanks

After only one months use on easy and light sewing projects it broke down. The handwheel got stuck and the machine would not respond to anything. The response from Brother Support only provided automated and generic answers.

Not at all happy with the product or the manufacturers response to the problem.

Sews great BUT Prepare for Threading Problems & Poor Operating Information.

I've been sewing for over 40 years and have never owned a serger. I finally broke down and purchased the Brother 1034D.

CONS: The biggest problem I have found with the 1034D is the threading of it. The bottom access door is positioned at a 45 degree angle which makes it hard to thread the bottom. (I scratched my arm to pieces and drew blood, on the edge of the door). It has a pair of tweezers to use for the threading... For me the tweezers were worthless. I dumped the tweezers and use a small pair of needle-nose pliers. The Brother
"How To" video gives you an idea of what the machine can do. It absolutely is hard to follow for the threading of the machine. I must have looked at the video, then read the book, half dozen times. The video stops at the crucial points so you really don't know what they have done. I did hunt and find a complete "how to" video online. I would strongly suggest in hunting that down. Instruction book cuts off on pages. For example the picture may be on page 3, with instructions on page 4..

PROS: It sews really nice. It saves time doing just one seam, thread is relatively inexpensive, and the cutter is a great feature. Can be easily changed from 2 needle to one. I recently ordered the elastic feeder foot and the pearl sequin foot. Takes regular needles, and I have tried "regular" thread with 1 or more serger thread and it handles it well.

Would I recommend this machine, Yes-On how well it sews, but be prepared with problems of threading and poor operating materiels from Brother

Better than industrial - easy to use, portable, functional, more options

I bought this serger to do proper finishing on clothing at home versus when I am in class and can use an industrial. Though I love industrial sergers except for the fact that you can not change anything except the thread color, tension and stitch length, I think this serger measures up to an industrial pretty well. I have used 3 and 4 thread serging on this machine and it's comparable to professional clothing finishings. This machine also allows me a lot more variety in tension, stitch length, 1 or 2 needles, 3/4 thread, serging style, etc. that make it so I can always adjust it to the perfect combination for any fabric. So far I have used knits, satin, lightweight wool and cotton on this machine and it handles it all beautifully. My only gripe with this machine is that you cannot serge a corner on itself to cut off the extra thread like you can with an industrial, which in turn sometimes leaves small loose threads that even clippers can not get to. Besides that, I very much prefer this machine to an industrial.Read full review...

Love my Brother 1034D Serger

I was looking for a serger for quiet a while. After comparing prices on different sites I came accross Ken's Sewing, here on Ebay. The reviews on this product from seller are a very good gauge of what you will get at the end. I saw they sold re-manufactured sergers and decided to buy the Brother 1034D as the price was the best I had found anywhere else. Even including the shipping and the import charges, this was still the best deal. The serger is easy to use but make sure to use the instruction cd or check out videos on youtube about this serger to get started. I have been using it for some days now and I love it. My clothes look more proffesional and this was exactly what I was looking for. I would highly recommend this serger.Read full review...

Excellent and great features

I am enjoying using this Serger. I did spend more than a day trying to figure out the cutter on the machine. Later looked at more pictures and realized that it was broken, reordered and install a new one and it now works great. It is fairly easy to use when following the manual and disk instructions or you can find lots of help online. I have another brand Serger and I like this one a lot better, it is a great machine.Read full review...

You would wonder how you lived without this machine!

We are not professional seamstress, but we like to provide a new purpose to old fabric from outgrown clothings by redesign them for new items. Having sawing machine is a must but often times you also NEED a serger machine too. We've done enough research to find out that Brother 1034D comes with the features that home "seamstress" needs at reasonable price! It took some doing to fish the threads into right "loops", but once the threads were properly done, the machine made very short work of serging all the fabrics! With careful usage, we hope to get many years (decades) of fine service out of it. Brother's 5 year limited warranty is reassuring as well. To anyone who work with open-ended fabrics, we highly recommend this machine. Read full review...

Study Up - It's Worth It

I bought mine used (only 1 previous owner) so I had to learn to thread it. Make sure the needles are inserted all the way too - that is what tripped me up. Watch the cds that come with it, you will learn so much. I wouldn't recommend a serger for someone who has never sewn before. It's not a starter machine but it makes the most beautiful finishing stitches for almost any sewing project. It will make you look like a professional! Read full review...

Love the brand, works great.

The brother sergers are great. This model is color coded to help with the complex threading process, which always helps. The manual is available online, which I do recommend downloading. But this is a must have for professional looking seam work. Did have to do some cleaning and oiling beforehand, but well worth the time and effort.Read full review...

"Easy to learn how to use"

This is my first experience using a Serger and so far it has been positive. It took a couple of trial and error with the threading but now it takes no time to get it done. The color coding is very helpful when you first start learning how to operate the Serger. I am looking forward to many hours of sewing with this machine.Read full review...

awesome works first time every time

Ordered this serger to replace one I had sold a few years ago...did not miss a beat - the machine came threaded and ready to go.. plugged it in and wow it did its thing.. the instruction booklet gives good detail -word/picture.. and its easy to find info in. It is new, has multiple presser feet and tools. came with 4 color threads -about enough to "try it out" then switched to regular cone thread. With prior serger experience, this was a breeze to use and wow is it fast. Have not broken a thread yet... no doubt it will be easy to replace. It is a machine to be enjoyed for as long as needed. Great price (eBay) and arrived in stated time. Brand new in the box, warrantied. a very happy purchase!Read full review...
