excellent camera for beginers

it's every bit as good as I've read in camera magazines and other websites. a little bigger than I expected but well worth the purchase price. incredibly high demand for this model and there are many out there for sale. it took me over a month of bidding to get one at a price I could afford. Windows 10 does not support this model so downloading your pictures is not as easy you would expect but not difficult.Read full review...

Excellent beginner-DSLR

I originally picked up the XT for two reasons, one - I wanted an upgrade from the point & shoot junk, and two - this particular camera had a lot of astronomy add-ons/compatibility and I've been wanting to hook a camera up to a telescope.

A month or so in now, I find myself taking the thing everywhere. It's a perfect size for a DSLR, pictures are fantastic (especially for it's age & resolution) and my particular one came with a fantastic SIGMA lens.

I think I may not have been as excited if I had bought one with the factory freebie lens, but having the slightly-stronger strength of the SIGMA and the lightning-fast focus speed is great for portraits as well as some building/architecture shots. I've taken some awesome pictures of the Capitol here by simply standing on the sidewalk.

I do wish the exposure shutter length could be set longer than 30 seconds for my night-sky photography, my son's Nikon 3100D will go quite a bit longer - 5 minutes I think, but I realize that is a miniscule concern for most - and thus the one-point off for features. On the other hand, I spent about $600 on the Nikon for my son's birthday, and less than $200 on my Canon.

If you need digital video - this is not it.. there is no video feature, look at the aforementioned Nikon with it's commercial/advertisement-grade 1080p capabilities... but for a basic DSLR that is easy to learn to use, this is definitely it.

Cannon EOS Rebel XT - Great first DSLR

I bought this camera years ago when I finally moved away from the film version I owned in the 90s. It only took me a couple of hours to figure out all the controls and options that were different than the film camera and I have been happy with the picture quality and flexibility of deleting pictures that didn't come out exactly the way I wanted.

This camera is lightweight and I have taken it on backpacking trips and even learned how to take great firework pictures with it. My friend who is a professional photographer uses a Nikon and comparing the picture quality they are very similar. He even has shown me a couple of tricks to improve the quality of the pictures I have taken. Using the full manual controls and knowing what you are doing you can take professional photos with this little camera.

The only thing that I dislike about this camera is the memory card is so big and uses pins to plug into the camera. You have to get a separate reader if you want to download to your computer directly. I have never tried to use the USB cable. I do have two better lenses than the 18-55 mm lens that is bundled from Cannon.

I did let someone borrow my camera and he put the memory card in upside down and bent the pins. Looking at replacements I decided to stick with the Rebel XT. For the price this is perfect for what I do.

I am still using it, even after 5 years.

I bought this camera (albeit in black) in 2005. I've been using mine almost continually ever since. It's an absolutely phenomenal camera. It's a bit outclassed now in terms of megapixels but 8 megapixels will still produce an excellent 16 x 24 inch print or at a push even a 20 x 30 inch print. I've exhibited 16 x 24 prints in state-level competitions taken with this camera.

The batteries are decent and I do advise the battery grip. Canon batteries seem to work well but the knock-offs I've had have generally been a waste of money as they die after two or three charges.

The kit lens is much maligned but used within its capabilities is excellent.

As far as the body is concerned, it works well enough. Focussing is generally pretty reasonable though not excellent. I have never managed to get really crisp eyes from a portrait with this and this is due to the vagueness of the focussing. The same lens on a 30D produces really crisp eyes. This is not all bad though - it does excellent landscape and building photos. Focussing on low contrast is more miss than hit as is low-light focussing. Adding the STE-2 to help with focussing helps a bit but not much. I have used this to produce excellent studio shots of static subjects and even used the pictures taken for publication in a couple of books that have been published.

This is a reasonably good camera. The 30D is far superior but I still keep my XT.

Great old camera

I had a Canon xs a few years ago and sold it, because I wasn't really prepared to use such a large camera. I sold it within a month or so and got pretty much all my money back. After buying 4/3rds cameras and loving them I saw this one on
ebay and decided to bid on it. I got it for a good price and I find it is every bit as good as the xs I had. 8 GB is enough for most things.

The camera is very easy to use and has enough features to challange you if you want to get into the more creative aspects of the camera. The camera is great for the outdoors and inside with a flash. When I need a better low light camera I have a Olympus xz-1 in my pocket that will take pictures in the dark, practically.

Delving into SLRS made Easier with the Rebel.

This camera has a user friendly interface, designed to work with either the occasional photography enthusiast to even a professional photographer. This camera is a great starting SLR for anyone interested in testing the Digital SLR water. Batteries and lenses are still being made that fit this camera, and the Canon website is keeping all the software and firmware up to date for it on their page.

I originally bought this camera looking to delve deeper into photography, and to receive some of the benefits that simple point and shoot cameras lack. The only thing I really dislike about this camera is that it is a little bulky. However, I can't complain at all considering the time it was made and the fact that is indeed, after all, an SLR.

The built in flash does the job for the little things, and suffices in low light situations. However if you really want to light up the room, get a separate flash system.

Compared to simple point and shoots, this camera offers a much broader range of modes and functions that enable the camera to manipulate photographs to desired effects more so than the point and shoots. Although the camera is only 8 MP, that is really all you need. The main difference between higher and medium to lower MP is the size of the picture you desire. If you want to make a huge poster, than go for a higher MP. However if you are just taking pictures standard sized or smaller than a huge poster, its easier and cheaper to get the lower MP.

Overall I would definitely recommend this camera to anyone willing to give the SLR world a shot. I would recommend bringing extra batteries along (you can find lithium ones online from retailers) whenever you are going to be doing a lot of photography.

The average price you can expect for one varies between $250-500 depending on accessories being sold along with the camera, however, the body alone can be bought for around $250. I would recommend ditching the 18-55 mm lens as it doesn't really bring the quality to a picture that most are looking for. Try instead a 28-105 perhaps (like what I have).

Hope this helps!

Very good camera for the beginer SLR user

The camera takes very good pictures and is very easy to use the setting are placed very well as to make it easy to change ISO, AF, WB. It is a perfect camera for someone wanting to use a SLR camera without spending a bundle of money. The camera does not have video. This is OK if you just want to take pictures. The display is a little small for todays cameras, but is efficient. THe camera has a burst mode that allows 3 to 4 pictures a second. This is very fast. Taking pictures of animals or chieldren is a sench for this camera. In my openion the camera is loaded with very good features.Read full review...

Professional pics from a nonprofessional

I have really been enjoying photography since being a seller on Ebay. We just returned from the beautiful Glacier Mountain region and this camera made this vacation very memorable. I didn't know what to look for in a camera and searched the internet for help. This is a great size for me, love how the camera does all the work, I can take pics fast and later pic my favorites, I can count on the quality every time! This camera worked great for family pictures also!! I don't have to recharge this camera nearly as often as the other camera I have had. High would highly recommend this as a purchase. I also was able to receive help from a retailer in regard to purchasing a case and tips on usage - I am very happy with this purchase!!!

Rebel Series Delivers Big Bang for your Pro Photography Money!

As a professional Photog, The Canon Rebel series is my go-to mainstay working tool. In comparison to other well known names in DSLR camera's, I find it to be faster and more reliable. It's light weight is a real advantage for a long day of shooting. Another great advantage is the extended range and lack of edge cropping you get out of your lenses when used on these smaller framed camera's. I use this camera on a regular basis for everything from billboard images to delicate macro imaging. The Canon software is easy to use and integrates nicely into my photo editing workflow. To sum it up, Great Price, Great Value, Great Features. Where will I look for my next camera? You guessed it! Canon Rebel Series!Read full review...

High quality pictures at an affordable price.

The quality of pictures still goes hand in hand with the new canons available. You can not beat the value for what you get. It is a very easy camera to learn and teaches you alot about the basic digital camera use but you can still get some super high quality shots before you go out and spend some real money for an upgraded camera. The megapixes are small compared to the newer cameras but unless you are going to be doing alot of posters then I don't see that as an issue. I keep this one as a back up camera to my canon mark iii and I still use it alot with no worries about the quality of my pictures. I recommend for beginners and professionals alike.Read full review...
