A superbly sharp wide-angle lens for your Canon film camera

This 28 mm lens offers a wide-angle experience that is approximately twice as wide as that offered by a standard 50 mm lens. It is just that little bit wider than the 35 mm, which was probably the first wide-angle that most people bought, and therefore probably a bit more useful.

Like all Canon FD lenses it has a manual focus and is very sharp indeed. In the days when this lens was manufactured the zoom lenses were not as sharp as the fixed focal length lenses like this one, and this is probably still the case, but to a lesser extent, with today's modern lens technology. A fixed focus lens like this will also have fewer aberrations and distortions than a zoom lens of the same vintage.

At f2.8 this lens admits a bit more light than a zoom with an aperture of f3.5 or f4.5. It can be used in lower ambient light therefore.

It will not fit your Canon EOS or modern digital SLR unless you can find an adapter of some sort, and I don't know if these are manufactured anywhere. However on one of the older Canon film cameras (e.g. AE1, FTb, F1 etc etc) it is absolutely superb.

Look for the obvious faults when buying second hand - sticky iris blades, scratches on the lens surface, fungus and dust between the elements. Don't worry too much if it comes without a lens cap or rear cap. These can be still be bought on eBay quite cheaply.

If you get one in reasonable shape it will be a great buy!

Generaly good quality, and value, but a slight haze that was not mentioned.

Old lenses often suffer from a slight haze or fog, this one was advertised as "In excellent condition" so I didn't expect too much of that. The price was quite low for a 28mm f/2.8 lens, but it does suffer from a slight fog that a little annoying. It's not so much that it kills the picture and it still a very usable lens, but it would have been nice to hve been warned in advance so that I could make up my mind. For instance I recently bought a cannon EOS film lens advertised as "Having a slight fog due to age." It didn't stop me form buying it because I like the effect at times, and often these old lenses though not perfect, have a pleasant effect..Read full review...

Great value for vintage feel!

Not as sharp as my other lenses but has a certain vintage feel about it (edge sharpness and color reproduction) Love it! Super light and portable!

old but good

This is an old lens for canon FD
but i own a old canon A1 too
and this lens is awsome because you can use the body in full auto mode (A) and the lens in hyperfocal setup at f8.0
then, no matter of what you do, pictures are sharp!Read full review...

I was delighted with the quality, virtually as good as new and a pleasure to use. Super service as well.
