Food photography

I'm a food photographer and this is perfect for the close up shots I need. You can get super close and really see the details. It's lighter weight than the normal L series glass, but it still maintains the sharpness. I would not reccomend unless you work pirmarily on Marco shots and would suggest the 135mm of your not a table top of product photographer.Read full review...

Canon 100mm f2.8 Macro - Big Bang for the Buck

This the first true macro lens I purchased. It is simply an amazing tack sharp macro lens that also functions well as great portrait lens. I use it on a 50D and have had outstanding results. It focuses quickly and accurately. The size and weight of this lens make it a pleasure to use. At f2.8 it is fast enough for most situations.

I have been using Canon equipment for nearly 40 years and rarely, if ever, have I been disapointed. This lens lives up to its reputation. It is one of the best values in the entire lineup of Canon lenses. It may not have the red srip of the L Series lenses, but you get L class results!

Fantastic lens! A must-have for your pro kit!

We recently added the 100 2.8L as an update for our product photography and have been blown away with the image quality we are getting. I wasn't prepared for the high resolution of fine detail, including picking up all of the defects and dust on our shooting table! I have owned a variety of macro lenses and bellows attachments over the past thirty years, and can count this one as my new favorite! Now I wish I had picked it up sooner!
Where the standard 100mm 2.8 macro was very good, the "L" is outstanding. Looking forward to using it on an upcoming portrait project as well.
I am shooting this on both the 1Ds MkIII & 5D MkII and have found that focus is dead-on right out of the box, with no MA needed.

My Lens Collection is now complete!

Amazing lens for your Canon Rebel EOS. It takes great Macro shots and is an excellent portrait lens as well. I needed a lens to take macro shots as none of my other lenses could do this well. I was also looking for a prime lens that could take great portraits. The Canon EF 100 Macro fits the bill for both my needs all in one lens. I can get really close up shots with this lens. It's great for photographing small objects and insects and also does a decent job of portraits.Read full review...

Great lens

A little dusty, but takes great macro pictures after a little cleaning.

A great lens for the price

This lens is a great buy for any photographer. Great bokeh, minimal lens distortion and fast focus. The absence of image stabilization is a down side but doesn't play as big a factor as you would expect for this spec of a lens 100mm. If you are rich, get the lens with IS, else don't worry too much about it's absence.

I am extremely satisfied with the purchase. One of the things you'll notice immediately is the focus range. Taking a portrait photograph with this lens will illustrate what I describe easily. The focal range of the image is the subject and the background is naturally out of focus in a very artistic / Gaussian like blur perfect for portraits or macro photography which this lens is primarily designed.

A very great buy, well worth the money. If your not sure whether or not to get it, buy it on ebay and try it. If you aren't satisfied, sell it on ebay. Lenses hold their value here very well unlike computers or other items of interest.

Buy it

Sharp, great for portraits but I bought it for the Macro 1.1 and it’s great for that. I love the fact that it has image stabilization.

An excellent macro lens

We're anything but professional photographers (we're learning!), but we at Embassy Emeralds needed a good macro lens to capture the fine details of the gemstones and jewelry we work with. We tried a handful of other lesser cameras and the lenses that came with them, but this one clearly beat them all. Gemstone photography can be tricky, but this lens makes the desired result much more attainable. The emeralds found on our ebay store were shot with this lens and many of the shots came out great. Any others that did not were due to lack of experience on the users part. For a novice (or pro) I highly recommend this excellent macro lens.Read full review...

Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens

This lens is my favorite now.

The Canon USM 100 Macro is sharp from f 5.6 on up. It is very acceptably sharp wide open at F 2.8. The color balance and handling or blurring of backround when close focused is fantastic. It really shows on prints larger than 13 x 19 where shots taken with this lens remain critically sharp to the most critical eye.

If you do macro photography you won't find a sharper, better made lens. I would highly recommend this lens to professionals or anyone who likes the best when it comes to optics.

I Love it in low light situations too. i shot a show the other night for the first time with this lens and all I can say is ... where have you been all my life!
