Versatile lens that is excellent quality!

Canon makes good lenses! I really love this 24-105mm f/4 lens. The internal stablization is an excellent feature. This lens seems slightly softer (less sharp) than other Canon "L" lenses that I've used. That's not necessarily good or bad––just something to take into account if you are considering purchasing this lens.

These are super durable lenses and last for many years (I had one for many years, gave to a friend and now own a second one), so buying one used is often a great way to save some $$ and still get an amazing lens with many years of life left. Just make sure you purchase from a reputable seller!

If I was to mention one complaint about this lens is that the zoom extension is really loose. Meaning that if you extend the zoom out to 105mm and tilt the lens so it is pointing up, gravity causes the lense to zoom back out to 24mm. And similarly, if I sling the camera over my shoulder, it slowly zooms in until it is fully extended at 105mm. I think this is partly due to heavy, high-quality glass. But still, I wish it stayed put and was stiff enough not to be affected by gravity. Having owned two of these lenses, I can say that the newer the lens, the less of a problem it is. It seems to "loosen" up over time.

Canon 24-105mm f/4.0L Is it worth the price

Last year I rented a Canon 24-105mm f/4L lens to do a wedding shoot. Normally I would use my Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 (which by the way is a great lens)but decided to try the 24-105mm for its longer reach and quick and accurate focusing. OK so here's what I found.

This lens focuses much quicker than my Tamron, with little or no hunting. It's pretty much on par with my other L series lenses.

Image quality wide open (f/4.0) is softer than my 70-200 f/2.8L IS wide open (f/2.8). However add a stop and the image is much crisper. Add another 1/2 stop and it's awesome.

The nice thing about this lens is that it seems to be able to focus at just over a foot. That seriously beats my 70-200 and is great for some of the work I do. I was going to buy a macro lens but now that I have this lens I just got some extension tubes.

Great lens, wish it was faster (2.8) but its still worth buying.

Nice lens at a great price!

This is a nice medium-range lens. It offers a nice zoom range. It also has nice clarity. Light weight compared to higher quality lenses which can be a plus when carrying for extended periods of time. I am a photographer with two L-series Canon lenses but I purchased this as a third lens to give an assistant photographer to take candid photos for me at weddings.Read full review...

What a great choice!

I have used the much older EF 28-135mm IS USM lens for years because it was sharp. Even prime lens were not any sharper than it. This "L" grade lens steps up the game on color capture providing more contrast. The images appear more sharp but I wonder if the contrast is a big part of that. The straight through f/4 is a bigger improvement than I thought it would bring, very pleased. I love this lens on my low price Rebel SL-1 camera. According to DXoMark the improvement is even better on more expensive camera bodies.Read full review...

Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Lens

I use a Canon 7D. With an APS-C sensor the 24-105mm lens is actually a 38-168mm focal length. Unfortunately Canon hasn't chosen to produce an L lens in its short series for APS sensors. While the 24-105mm L lens isn't a terrific walk-around lens due to marginal wide angle capabilities (38mm with the 1.6 APS multiplier) it fills a portraiture niche rather nicely. After having used EF-S lenses with plastic bodies and notchy feeling zooms the L lens has a welcome smoothness only a metal body can provide. Couping a 10-20mm zoom Sigma with metal body and smooth zoom with the 24-105mm Canon lens gives great coverage with a small weight price to pay in carrying the extra lens. The 24-105mm lens is reasonably sharp but does exhibit some purple fringing if the image is enlarged substantially. With software like Photoshop or even the provided Canon software that comes with the 7D fringing can be eliminated to the extent that it isn't a reason not to purchase a lens. I hope Canon elects to build an L lens with a focal length of 15-85mm, but until they do the 24-105mm is the next best thing when coupled with an extra wide angle lens.Read full review...

Classic Cannon Quality

Great lens that obviously was used before it came home to me. While you might be thinking, uh oh it was thrashed - it totally wasn't but then again it wasn't out of the box new either. If I was forced to be picky the only minor "flaws" are that the focusing in low light is somewhat slow (yes, this could also be my camera body) and when carrying it the lens tends to slide out to 105. Other than that - its a complete champ.Read full review...

Full frame must have in your kit!

I usually do shooting sports photography. Lots of movement and weather to contend with. There is also the fact that I'm I'm photographing people shooting guns with live ammo so I need to stay at a safe distance. I've tried a few different lenses over the past couple years from 18-70 f2.8 to 70-200 f4. There's always that one shot that "almost" works but falls in the "sweet spot" gap between the two main lenses.
This one is a beast! It checks all the right boxes with a nice overlap of my other workhorses. Color is pretty good so my post work is less. The autofocus is fast and quiet and tracks pretty nicely and the zoom is nice and smooth to boot
This is now my walk about lens. I recommend it!

Amazing 24-105L Lens...

Will be testing it fully this weekend at an event. Tested lightly after unboxing and so far so good. I love the weight and the smoothness of the zoom ring... a real deal of a lens.
