Great overview of CKC from the early to mid 20th century
This collection has been expertly assembled and beautifully transferred. There are a few errors in recording dates but otherwise the accompanying booklet is very informative. Each selection is given a full biographical background. Great care was taken in the transfers. The sound should not detract anyone from enjoying the recordings despite many of the acoustical era recordings. With several of these sets given to my parents and friends who are elderly and Yiddish speaking, they "kvell" (are delighted) in hearing these recordings in such good sound. FIVE STARS for this anthology. Highly recommended. I have 3500 CKC 78 and LP recordings so it takes a lot to impress me. Most CD transfers are so heavily noise gated/shaped that they lose dynamics, tonal shading, highs and lowsRead full review...

Cantors, Klezmorim and Crooners 1905-1953
This is living history on cd! The 3 cds open a window into the world of the Jewish people both in Europe in the first half of last century before the Holocaust. The klezmorim, traditional secular musicians give us just a flavour of the zest and joy of Jewish weddings and other celebrations in the Pale of Settlement, a way of life so brutally obliterated by Nazi thuggery. Their lost world is a reminder to us of its destruction. Secondly we are given a window into the first generation of Jewish settlers in America who sang comedy and love songs in Yiddish. We also meet immegrant klesmorin like Naftule Brandwine, the great, but outrageous clarinetist. Then thirdly we are treated to Jewish religious singing by some of the great cantors of the early part of last century and the solemn beauty of their voices and chants. Their religious learning and observance are, of course, the backbone of Jewish society and the true repository of what it means to be Jewish. Who cares about the hiss and crackle, it is a privilege to be able to listen such a magnificent series of recordings!Read full review...
