Beginning of the saga

My first foray into the Mega Man Series was with Mega Man 2. I was immediately impressed with the colorful worlds and excellent sound track. Since MM2 piqued my interest, I immediately began to search for the original. This was 1990 and I didn't have the luxury of having the internet to find older games. Luckily, I was able to find a new copy at a toy store. Compared to MM2, MM is a little rough around the edges, but it set many of the conventions for the series.

MM graphics are not as impressive as MM2, but sequels are supposed to improve on the original. But compared to other games released around the same time as MM, MM is very impressive with how colorful and detailed the worlds are. The music is just as impressive, but not as memorable as MM2. My favorite tunes are on Bombman and Iceman's levels.

The trademark of the MM series is being able to select any level (6 in MM, 8 in the later games) and gaining the enemy's power after defeating them. This requires some strategy since some weapons work on other enemies better than others.

The original MM is known for being quite difficult. Well I can attest to that. There are a few spots that will frustrate the hell out of you. Gutsman level has some platforms that require exact timing to get pass. By far the worst is on Iceman and the first Wily level. There are these floating platforms that follow an erratic pattern and on top of that, they shoot at you which can knock you off into an abyss or spikes. Even to this day, I still have a hard time getting passed those parts. You are pretty much at the mercy of those platforms and hope they follow a decent pattern.

If you are a fan of the MM series, MM is a great start to the series. Though the latter games patterned themselves more after MM2, MM still has its charms.

The Game That Started It All

It is not often that a great gem like Mega Man is released. It is the very first Mega Man game ever made, and the game that started an explosively popular video game franchise loved by gamers worldwide. In this game, you play the role of Mega Man, and you must fight your way through 6 different stages to defeat 8 different Robot Masters that have been programmed for evil by the mad scientist Dr. Wily. After defeating the 6 Robot Masters, you must fight through 4 more stages at Dr. Wily's lair, and eventually fight Dr. Wily himself to finish the game. This is the only Mega Man game that does not feature a password screen, and also the only Mega Man game to keep score. The game may seem slightly simplistic compared to the other 5 NES Mega Man games, but by no means does that mean this title is bad. I highly recommend picking up a copy.Read full review...

Old School NES

The original Mega Man-classic, challenging, and fun. I think this is a great game from the 80's. It had a cult following as evidenced by the number of sequels that followed. It's fun and had incredibly good graphics and music for the era and system it was designed for. Some NES games have annoying and downright terrible music scores, but this game took advantage of every bit of usable technology for the NES in that regard. Though the sequels that came out later seemed to have slightly more color and better graphics, this game was EXTREMELY impressive for 1987. Capcom even stated on the box: "State-of-the-Art" and "High Resolution Graphics".
The only complaint I might have about it, and it's a minor one, is that this is the hardest Mega Man game out of the 6 made for the original NES. It takes a long commitment to win this game unless you play it regularly. Some levels are much harder than others and there is a relative order to take when selecting levels to be able to beat the bosses with their acquired weapons. But, a challenge is a good thing. Overall, this gets 5 stars.

Action packed challenge

Mega Man 1 is a must-have for any NES collector. The game is a total blast and it very challenging. You make your way through six bosses then unlock the evil Dr. Wily final boss. This is the very first game in the series so I recommend starting with this game if you don't own any Mega Man games.Read full review...

The first of the Blue Bomber's adventures.

Mega Man (known as Rockman in Japan) was released in America by Capcom in 1988 -the first of six installments released for the Nintendo Entertainment System. You play the role of the eponymous robot, Mega Man, who is on a mission to stop Dr. Wily's global conquest. To reach Wily, Mega Man must fight through six of the evil doctor's master robots.

Being the first in the series, it missed out on a lot of the later games' innovation, but that doesn't stop it from being fun. If you can get past the occasional cheap death from being knock off a ledge and into a bottomless pit or spike bed, you have a very solid and enjoyable arcade-style platformer for the NES. An excellent addition to any retro gamer's collection.

Mega Man

This game is classic. It's got all the villians you know and want to beat. It's Mega Man at its finest. The levels are pretty short, but very difficult. If you can manage to get past the 6 level bosses, then Wiley's castle awaits, which is just on a whole higher level of difficulty. While this game is hard, it just makes it that much more worthwhile when you do finally beat it. A great game and the start of a great series of games. The only drawback is the absence of some features that are present in later titles of the series, but that's to be expected with the first of its kind. Since the game is older than I am, I give it a break.Read full review...

Mega Man IS the only game ever

When I was young I had a Nintendo. I had the Mario games, Zelda games and a few other big games of the system at the time. I even had a game called Sector Z... But none of those games ever captured my imagination and tested my skill like the Mega Man games. I am not sure why but not since I first played Mega Man has there ever been a game to match it in my mind. I have played all of the Halo's, Final Fantasy's and Mass Effects but for some reason I still want to play this game more. I love the simpleness, the puzzle of which robot boss do I go after and with which weapon should I use. The music alone makes me, even at 30, feel like I am sitting in my parent's living room playing this game. I didn't want to live my youth on an emulator nor could I imagine playing the re-release on PS2. I had to have the game itself and I am extremely happy to once again own this masterpiece!Read full review...

Perfect for people who just want to play the game on an NES without breaking the bank

I have slowly been collecting the NES Mega Man games and I knew that this one would be the hardest to get because of its ridiculous price. When I found this I was cautious and skeptical when I bought it, and my fears were put to rest when I got the game. Just by looking at it, it's very clearly not an original cartridge, but it plays perfectly and for the price, I couldn't be more satisfied.Read full review...
