Forgotten history comes to life again
This book is a must-read for anyone who has an interest in the American Army Air Force campaigns in the China-Burma-India Theatre. Famous for the "Flying Tigers" -- the American Volunteer Group P-40 fighter unit which was absorbed into the US 14th Air Force -- the heavy bomber pilots and crews, in contrast, fought and died by the thousands in near anonymity. (My uncle was a B-24 Liberator pilot in the 373rd Bomb Squadron who gave his life there.) Not only did the airmen of the 308th Bomb Group have to fly hazardous combat missions, many were lost on "routine" flights while transporting their own supplies from India into China across the infamous "Hump," the Himalayan mountain range with the tallest mountains on Earth. Members of the 14th Air Force became the first American airmen lost in Indochina, which years later became Vietnam. These "average young men" performed near-Herculean tasks in the normal course of their daily duties, struggling with few resources in primitive conditions while fighting against enemy forces which usually far outnumbered their own.Read full review...
Chenault's Forgotten Warriors
Excellent book. My father was a first Lieutenant in the 308th and serve as a navigator in 1944. He rarely spoke f his service, unless it was late at night and he had had a few drinks. Some of the stories he related to me are confirmed in this book. I wish I had bought it twenty years ago!Read full review...
