Still better than a remake !

This is the first in what became a trilogy, and so forth. I focus on the first three mostly as a linearly running story. Come to think of it, The Curse of Chucky (2013) also had the human version of Charles Lee Ray for a few minutes. This film takes place in late 80's Chicago, where kids walk home and take the L train alone with a possessed doll happens like all the time. We come in as "Chucky" (Brad Dourif) is being chased down by a detective(Chris Sarandon) in hot pursuit. Well, Charles gets shot, so what do you do? Use your voodoo to do a soul-swap with a doll in a toy store. A soul-swap so powerful that it makes lightning strike the toy store into a blazing explosion. The Detective's sweater survived. This doll winds up being peddled by a caricature of a homeless guy, shopping cart and all. A mother whom (Catherine Hicks) wants to give her son the best birthday gets the rare doll and gives it to her son, Andy (Alex Vincent). And to give this kid credit, he isn't a bad child actor here and by the sequel in 1990 he is noticeably better. Any the doll gets his revenge either vicariously through explosion or with brute force with a hammer. The SFX for the doll are OK, especially for the time period, but you will see a shot here are there where they have a stand in (Ed Gale) whom I believe was the stand in for all 3 of the original films. Chucky goes to voodoo mans house and he tells him he can only do the soul swap with the first person he told his real name to which is...that kid. So he gets rid of the voodoo man, and goes to look for Andy. the third act of this film is tight, there's no real twist, it's just tight with good suspense especially the subject matter. It's simply great, despite it's age.Read full review...

Cheeky Chucky Chopping Chicks!

This movie has everything! Serial killer, Voodoo curses, kids in peril, Chris Sarandon - ok I have a thing for Chris Sarandon (:

Child's Play is your average boy-wants-doll-mom-buys-doll-which-is-possessed-by-serial-killer-who-plans-on-transferring-his-soul-to-boy story. Anyone who stands in Chucky's way is dead. Never understood how a doll could kill so many, he is pretty small!

Super cheesy goodness - if you missed it before, this is a movie about a possessed DOLL - with a funny and smart script and great acting. Forget the sequels, this is the original "Good Guy" with all his evilness at the pull of a string.

Great old movie

I'd you like the old scary movies, this one is a classic. I bought it for my grandson and he loves it! Brought me back to my early years watching it

Good horror film.

I think this is a very good, solid modern horror film. The cast is very good. The effects are above average. I would be scared of Chucky and I am 62! The cast has one of my favorite actors. Brad Dourif. He does a great job here. A must have for your library.Read full review...

Ya Gotta Love Chuckie!

Just watched this one a couple of weeks ago, after not having seen it in many years. It's certainly not as scary as it was when I was kid! Still a great horror classic, however corny and "fakey" it may be. (Probably just because technology nowadays makes all of these types of older movies seem amateurish.)

Too bad there ended up being so many sequels, which got stupider (not sure if stupider is a word, or not!) and stupider as they went along, and I felt, sort of turned Chuckie into less of a horror movie icon and more of just a money-making gimmick.

However, I still love Chuckie, will keep keep Child's Play 1 - 5 in my collection, and will watch them every few years!
