C&C RA2 - A GREAT real-time strategy game!

I had to buy a another copy as my initial one "wore out! - too many scratches..."!
I actually bought 12 copies and distributed them to many of my son's and daughters friends. They all find it quite addictive! I often find 4-5 of them huddled around the computer offering each other suggestions. It is a great game from a technical viewpoint - very stable, reliable, and intuitively easy and natural to play without reading volumes of manuals. Any game that can maintain a kids attention for hours on end, and YEARS on end speaks for itself!

I would like to see more maps and additional/alternative campaigns for 8 users. Additionally, it would be nice if you could import/export to other C&C versions (i.e. Generals). I'd also like to see civilians and economics similar to Age of Empires added to the game. It would be a huge mistake to modify this game from its current format and "improve" it the way they ruined AoE III!

If you like real-time strategy games, this is one of the best.

A game for a lifetime

Command & Conquer Red Alert 2 is the sequel to the popular 1996 spin-off of Westwood's definitive real-time strategy game. The latest game in the successful series isn't a dramatic technological improvement over any of its predecessors, and its hammy alternate-World War II setting borders on being tasteless. However, Red Alert 2 is a very polished game that combines tried-and-true play mechanics with enough new features, improvements, and enhancements to make it both an excellent sequel and a great real-time strategy game in its own right.

Red Alert 2 features a campaign for both the Allies and the Soviets, in addition to a short optional tutorial. The campaigns span a dozen missions each, and they won't take too long to finish; but they offer a lot of variety, and they're generally of very high quality. The densely populated urban settings of many of the battles are far more interesting than the flat plains and desert settings typical to most real-time strategy games - you can actually garrison your troops in various buildings and lay claim to neutral structures such as hospitals and airports. Full-screen, full-motion video sequences show the continuing story in between each mission. These sequences are self-consciously silly; they're so tongue-in-cheek that you might just as soon dislike them if you're used to taking games more seriously. Nevertheless, the video sequences are well made and generally amusing, and you might recognize some of the actors and appreciate some of the performances, like the creepy Udo Kier in the role of the Soviet psychic, Yuri.

Regardless of whether or not you enjoy this style, you're likely to find that Red Alert 2 is actually a very good game, from its interface to its play mechanics to its multiplayer mode. It's not the most visually impressive real-time strategy game available, but it's among the most enjoyable to date. Red Alert 2 offers lots of challenges and variety for real-time strategy players of all skill levels, and it'll be particularly fun for fans of previous Command & Conquer games.

The best video game for Windows 98.

Best video game platform I’ve ever played. Been playing it for 20-plus years. Good thing it still works on Windows 7.

Still Amazing

I first owned this game 20+ years ago and I'm still happy to replace my damaged discs. I think that says it all. I highly recommend this entire series start to finish.

The original CDs are better than the newer bundled DVD versions of C&C

Classic game! The original game CDs are better than the newer ones that come in the collections of 10 or 13 C&C games. I installed all the games on the Decade DVD, and it added over 30 seconds to my computer's boot up time after a clean install because of all the copy protection. Also, the Decade Red Alert 1 version can be buggy.

Unlike the previous Win9x only C&C games, This game was designed to work on Windows NT so no special installers or tricks need to be done on modern systems. It does use SafeDisc copy protection which does load a Windows driver. On some games that can cause problems if you're not an administrator and the SECDRV driver isn't set to load automatically. LAN play is done with IPX, so you need a 32-bit Windows older than Vista, or some software work around, to be able to play LAN games. I believe there is an active online player community for the C&C series games at cncnet.org.

Very Interesting Strategy Game!!

Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2 is in my opinion a very fun, exciting and interesting game. The setup and design of the game are excellent, and there are so many things you can do, you'll never run out of cool ideas and strategies. Red Alert 2 + Expansion Set (Yuri's Revenge) are great games and should be at least tried. With all the tanks, futuristic weapons, this game is just overall fun.Read full review...

like, cant go wrong, buy it now, good to xpand ur mind.

the game is just exellent, but graphics are a bit bad, but is a great game, like it cuz u can attack through the air, through the water, and ground, so is a very stratigic game. just when u though u couldn't do more u just learn new stuff from the game to defeat you friend in the next game, it just keep going and going, and is just fun. . . one of my major problems i had was instaling it, just like my other games, because i have windows vista, but in the end i figure it out, now the problem is i cannot play with my friends, i cannot play land, i was really mad, i really don't know what to do, i'm stuck, but it still does not change the fact that i like the game. . .Read full review...

Good older game

This game is a great PC game, though not as advanced as many current game systems run. It becomes an even better game when coupled with Yuri's Revenge, the next in the line of Command and Conquer games.
I bought this extra copy so that I could give my friends this copy and play the game online with them. Setting the game up to play online is easy, but I have had lots of troubles setting it up for network play.
