big fun

Dark Cloud 2 is one of those games where you can tell the developers really put a lot of effort into making it. There're so many things in this game, the towns are extremely detailed, the graphics are rich and colorful, the inventive Georama System really let's you play with your imagination, among many other things. The Georama System is perhaps the most fun in the game. You get build your own town while still keeping certain objectives in mind. For example, put the trees next to the river, put a wheelbarrow next to this house. You find parts for building your town by finding Geostones in certain dungeons. The game's story is really nothing special. A couple of rag-tag adventurers are off on a journey to save the world from a dark force bent on conquering it. Yada yada yada, you know the drill. My biggest gripe with the game however is the tedious dungeon crawling, which in actuality, feels like a chore. You simply go around beating [up] monsters and once you find the item you're looking for and the key to get out, you're done. Then repeat about 10-20 more times to continue the story. Though there're optional objectives in each dungeon, it's hard to feel motivated into accomplishing them, unless you're one of those freaks who must complete everything in a videogame. And trust me, if you're a compltist, you're going to spend a lot of time with this game. Aside from optional dungeon objectives, the game also lets you take pictures of just about every miniscule object, character, and monster in the game. If you choose the right combination of objects you've taken a picture of, you will be able to invent an item. Some characters will give you hints on what combination will work, some you'll have to find out on your own. Unlike a lot of RPG's these days where it's easy to become over-whelmed by strange terminology and a plethora of sub-menus, the game includes helpful tutorials whenever a new concept is introduced into the gameplay, making everything simple to understand. Buy this game if you're into deep and expansive RPG's, but stay clear if you tend to get bored easily.Read full review...

Love-Love-Love it

This is the best video game I have ever played. I used to play this about 15 years or so ago on my playstation 2. Then I gave it to my grandkids. My granddaughter wanted it again and I thought I would get one for myself and have been playing it almost non stop since. This game has so many things to do within the game--fishing, fish races, spheda (like golf), building cities, little mini-quests, etc. I have played about 120 hours and am close to the end but this is a game you could just keep on playing. I really love it. And I am 65 years old.Read full review...

DarkCloud2 does NOT live up to the high review scores

I am a huge RPG fanatic. I have played dozens of PRGs across many different platforms. There were many great RPGs released for the PS2 console. After reading so many great reviews about DarkCloud2 I decided to buy it. The positive reviews that I read compared DarkCloud2's gameplay with that of Zelda and Diablo and Pokemon Snap. However, when I actually started playing DarkCloud2 it didn't live up to the high review scores.

Pros:
There are lots of different weapons in the game. Different weapon types will evolve into new weapons with use, and you can often chose the direction of your weapon's evolution. The game contains few mini games such as fishing, and the mini games are nicely done. The game combines many different gameplay elements successfully, elements like: exploration, city building, and taking photos.

Cons:
The game's story is one weak point in its cracked armor. In an RPG the story is very important and should be the driving force for the game, not the other way around. The game contains many invisible walls preventing your character from accessing areas that should be easily accessible. This fact alone separates DarkCloud2 from the excellent Zelda series. Next, the voice acting in the game is bad. The dialogue that gets delivered by the voice actors is equally bad, and is often senseless. The layout of levels are randomly generated (like in Diablo for the PC). However, this makes all the levels in a zone look the same! The dungeon exploration aspect of DarkCloud2 gets repetitive very quickly. Even the invention system used by the game is not enjoyable and is a step back from Pokemon Snap.

Bottom Line: DarkCloud2 is a unique RPG that tries to do too many things. While it provides many different gameplay elements, the experience as a whole will leave you wanting to play something else.

Awesome game

I have had this game before but gave it to my brother because he wanted it for his birthday. At some points in the game the voice acting is a little eh. But the story is so good! There are points where I laughed, cried, and got angry. If you are going to play it, play it on a smaller tv (40 or below) because it was made for a different kind of tv it gets a little fuzzy but still playable on the larger tvs.Read full review...

Best ps2 rpg game ever

Got this game the first time as soon as it came out, and still holds up as an amazing experience. The story keeps you interested and never want to put down the controller. The restoreing the future through building and creating adds hours of extra gameplay. I guarantee you won't regret getting this game!Read full review...

Best Game Ever!

The characters are attractive and the game play is good too. I love that you can build a town and also go into dungeons and kill things. The story is really good. I wish the creators would make another one.Read full review...

Nice little surprise

I love these games and haven't had a Complete in Box version of them since I was a kid as my old copies had perished in a fire. The fact that Dark Cloud 1 even has the original purchase receipt in it was an amazing little surprise and I plan on keeping it all together. Thank you.Read full review...

Great Game.

I love the ebay review question "Are the graphics good?". Of course they arent, the game is from 2003. But of course that's not why I bought it. The Original Dark Cloud was my first PS2 game, I just finally decided to play through the Second. Glad I did, great game.Read full review...

What the first installment should have been.

After playing the first installment in the Dark Cloud series, I was skeptical of the next one. While the first was inventive in ways, the gameplay was very repetitive. Dark Cloud 2, however, was over and above its predecessor in every fashion. The story was much more developed, involving a more vivid description and representation of the characters. The gameplay was continually fresh even until the end. The only downfall was the replay value. The game isn't as long as most RPGs and doesn't offer a New Game+ like a lot of titles of recent. The only 'extra' is the option to start a new game with the option to choose whatever outfit you wish for the two main characters. Other than that there isn't much else.

Even still, the game is definitely the better of the two installments and is worth the purchase and play.

8 out of 10.
