5 Stars. You don’t know what you have....

You won’t know what you have until years after you complete this series. Because SK builds the world in the first 3 books. It slow on first read. But, appreciated more upon finishing. It 5 stars. You just do do not know the gem you hold. I read this many years ago, and I find this book and these characters unforgettable. Jake and Roland have perfect chemistry, I see them as the best father and son duo ever written. I want to read this again, but I bought this edition because I want pics this time. This book provides wonderful artwork.Read full review...

THE DARK TOWER SERIES IS HIS BEST WORK YET

Stephen King does it again with another great story, The Dark Tower is one big story that is broken down into 7 books. The gunslinger is the first of many, and Im glad that he finally finished this series and i only stumpled upon it recently and didnt have the misfortune of waiting forever. He actually has a new introduction in the edition which explains somethings like why it took so long. This Story reads very well and i couldn't put the book down througout the entire series.
What i love most of all is this universe he created and toys with, you'll see in the series how he connects the book to several other stories hes written. The Stand, Hearts in Atlantis, Insomnia and many others. I'd say this is his best work yet, and i loved reading every bit of it.

The Gunslinger (The Dark Tower, Book 1) by Stephen King

This is the revised and expanded edition with illustrations. It had been a very long time since I read the original version, as you can tell from my previous review of "The Dark Tower 1". The 5 color illustrations evoke a sense of nostalgic magic, but for the one in the town of Tull. The townspeople are laid out in a straight line, as if they had stood in polite turn to attack the Gunslinger. At least the woman with the dress is true to print.

I had forgotten altogether that there was a peyote trip in the book--quite a haunting portrait in the chapter "The Oracle in the Mountains". "The Slow Mutants" was an intriguing chapter as well. A Passage under the mountains, railway cars, mutants, an apocalyptic subway station scene with mummified authorities... I was a bit disappointed at the abrupt end to Jake, though the bone-place with the Man in Black made up for it.

I believe the expansion came at the very end of the story--a teaser for "The Drawing of the Three", a bit of quantum philosophy, and a clue as to what the tower is. I plan to continue the series after my refresher, though I most likely will surf a few genres before coming back.

Short, Sweet and the beginning of a spectacular series.

The only thing I do not like about this book is the fact that it is so short! I remember buying this book about fifteen years ago when I was about twelve. It is a wonderful book and an extremely necessary book if you want to read the entire series, for if you skip one, you will never understand Roland or his quest.I have all seven books in the series (1st Edition/1st Printing Hard Covers) and I'm in the process of reading the fifth book (Wolves of Calla) again. These books are a staple for Stephen King fans and I suggest you get a copy today. This series IS NOT the normal Stephen King genre. It s not in-your-face horror but a masterpiece that sends you into your own gun-slinging daydreams. I Highly recommend this book and this series. I purchased this book so I could have a readable copy separate from my books in the study. Enjoy it!Read full review...
