A Monumental Picture in Movie History

None of the American made war movies ever made before 1985 can hold a candle in quality to this epic. The tension, claustrophobia and psychological drama of these sea wolves unfolds with stark realism in sharp focus. These are not the idealised characters of most navy going movies with all sailors well scrubbed, shaved, manicured, smelling good and looking like they just left home. On the contrary, the men in Das Boot's German U-boat wear the war on their faces, salt in their beards, oscillating between the adrenaline rush of the hunt for ships they torpedo, to sinking to the bottom of the ocean, with depth charges exploding all around them and the enemy on the surface waiting to kill them.

Although nominated in six categories for Oscar's in 1981, it did not win any which is very strange given the breadth of its achievements. This picture is a must see for anyone who wishes to explore the reality of submarine warfare during World War II. Director, Wolfgang Petersen tells a story over 2 hours inside the belly of a submarine that will have you on the edge of your seat feeling like you are inside the U-boat with the sailors trapped..

Still great after all these years

"Das Boot" still endures as one, repeat one, of the great submarine movies ever, and Petersen's "Director's Cut" only accentuates its reputation. It renks with several equals of the genre including "Run Silent, Run Deep" and "The Hunt for Red October, and trailed by "Crimson Tide" and several others who titles aren't immediately recalled.

Not merely "a view from the other side" of the Battle for the Atlantic during WW2, it is also realistic sharpshooting at the cinematic myths of war's glory, and a harsh look at the futility and tragedy of decent warriors doing their duty. The "Director's Cut" has only sharpened the focus by adding new footage absent from the first American showings that will disgust and enfuriate some viewers, and leave others gasping with laughter or amazement.

Das Boot - The Director's Cut

This is a film that I've been wanting to purchase for some time now. It was the dirfector's cut which means that it is the film the director wanted to release for public viewing before the censor's had it edited. It is an extremely long film, but it has to be in order to tell the story of a German submarine crew. 209 minutes of story telling. This may be one of the longest running films ever made. I purchased it so as I can critic it for my college class. It is perfect for my need and it is intertaining. I don't care aboout all the extra behind the scenes film which is included. I haven't watched them yet and if and when I do, I may change my mind.Read full review...

Das Boot makes for awesome "guy's night"

I'd lost my VHS copy (probably in a box in storage) and several buddies have been bugging me (for years) to "find it and let's all get together for a guy's night".
Every time I went to my storage unit, I pulled down a few boxes to look for the tape. No luck - for several years! Finally, it dawned on me to check eBay, and lo - there were several "Das Boot - Director's Cut" available on DVD! I don't know why it took me so long! I guess I'd thought the "director's Cut" would be impossible to find. Anyway, I ordered it, it arrived in 4 or 5 days and the next Friday night was all testosterone (and beer, pizza and wings!) Up PERISCOPE!
The original movie (1982)is widely considered the most realistic WWII sub movie ever made. The "Director's Cut" (1998) improved incredibly on this by adding 60 minutes of additional footage, going digital and widescreen, and creating new - improved sound effects, all in digital surround-sound. What an experience!
No romantic back-story, psychological navel-gazing, "Politically Correct"ness, cuteness or puppies! If that's your thing, watch "Friends" reruns. If you like Subs, Torpedoes, Destroyers and Depth Charges - I recommend "Das Boot, Director's Cut".

Amazed To See , Director's Cut for a timeless classic!

I was amazed to see a director's cut had been prepared for this timeless film from Wolfgang Peterson. Over the years he has been known for good films, some international and some not. This film gets at the confinement suffered by a crew on a submarine, but also how things quickly turn about which frequently happens in war.Read full review...

Must See WWII Claustrophobic Classic

Das Boot is a film about a German U-Boat during WWII that runs over 3hrs 45min. Sounds a bit daunting, even boring to some but it is SO worth it!

Even though most of my favorite movies are in the horror genre - see my other reviews - this is one of my favorite movies. I was tense half the time, the other half I was worried sick about the fate of the crew (and that was surprising to me since it is WWII and they are German) PLUS it seem too short!

I actually had heard about this movie, that it was a classic etc. But it did not sound interesting to me (3hrs in a submarine!). Then I bought a lot of movies - right here on Ebay - and this one was included. Thought I'd give it a try and have watched it about 4 times, not including the couple of times I've seen it on Bravo.

Beautifully shot and acted. Jurgen Prochnow was excellent as was the rest of the cast. The U-Boat was falling apart and is scarier than many horror movies.

I really cannot recommend this movie enough, it is a modern classic! Forget about the Hollywood takes on this theme (U-571 etc) they actually take certain parts of this movie and make them more Hollywood/All-American for easy consumption.

Das Boot - The Director's Cut

This is it. The best in, my opinion, submarine movie ever made. It's all here - story, acting, directing, casting, set. I own both the vhs and dvd version. The dvd version is dubbed and they did and excellent job. The subtitled version is also nice for people like me with less than perfect hearing - you don't miss anything and after about 5 minutes you forget that you are reading the dialog. It is a long movie but you don't notice it. So that you know my tastes, I also loved CRIMSON TIDE and HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER.Read full review...

The Best War Book of them All.

I had watched two versions of the movie Das Boot and enjoyed them very much. BUT I was totally unprepared for the book. It is 500+ pages of captivating detail of submarine life and war drama.
When I was done with the book, I offered it to my wife to read. She reads a great deal, but has no special interest in mechanical detail or war, but she was captivated by Das Boot. What better recommendation could I offer, for either the DVD or book ?Read full review...

The Best Version

I f you saw this movie in VCR format, you suffered the intolerable English with a German accent, not much of it could be understood, now is all clear, you can listen in German or in Better English. The movie is a paradigm for all the newer sub movies, it was made originally in 1981, Before Crimson Tide, The Hunt for Red of October or U571 The Widow Maker, so all of these take from it; it has 60 more minutes of footage. If you also want to see another classic see, Run Deep Run Silent, but beware, the special effects are not that good since the movie is old, the acting is great just as in this one, plus great special effects for its time 1981.Read full review...

Das Boot (The Boat)

This is truly one of the all-time best WWII submarine movies ever made. It was
nominated for six Oscars and follows the trials of a German U-boat crew during
their mission in the war. When it was re-released in 1997, an hour was added
to te original film, which further augmented its impact (so you want to buy
the 1997 or later edition). This movie was also shown as a six hour ministry
in Germany. The realistic and gripping battle scenes and the true life aboard
the German Submarine makes this movie a must see for all WWII students and War
Movie lovers. Great for students of history also-as this is a one of a kind
movie that shows the struggle of humans during the war.
