Good pop rock but lacks a bit of punch

Like a previous reviewer, I anticipated harder music with the punch that would have really highlighted and showcased Chris' great and unique vocal talents. Most of the songs are a bit on the bland pop side. To Daughtry's credit, there isn't a 'dog' of a song in the bunch, however. So, this CD is good, especially for an initial release; but hopefully the next one will feature a bit more variety in the blend. I'd like to hear some melodies and lyrics with more contrast and punch in the mix. Harder rock would simply suit his vocal style much better.Read full review...

Daughtry - Daughtry (CD), Chris from America Idol

I was wowed by his performance on Idol... I was mesmerized by his rough rock-n-roll style, I nearly cried when it was announced that this awesome raw talent was going home.... so, of course I eagerly awaited his debut album.

This man has the most powerful, most breath-taking, most captivating vocals that I have heard in a long time. However, I was dissapointed in this album. While his vocals are amazing and I dont' think it is bad... I was sad to hear it sounding so similar to some of the other bands on the radio today. I expected him to debut with this hardcore, hard-hitting, ROCK album but instead it sounds like all the others out there. I will remain a loyal Daughtry fan because I know he is capable of something unique, something different and I know he will deliver.

On another note: the lyrics are great, his vocals are on fire, and yes, it is definitely worth purchasing!!

lots of potential but in need of guidance

First off, Chris Daughtry is amazingly talented. Of the American Idol finalists, you could predict that he'd be the most marketable. His edgy style of singing is simply popular at the present.
r>This cd is primarily about romantic relationships, with is typical of radio-fare. It is almost void of spiritual themes and the deeper matters of basic human nature. While typical of first releases, even as good as this one is, his next will hopefully contemplate a wider range of more serious topics.

The lyrics are positive and clean. His post-grunge vocals and acoustic sensitivities certainly have their appeal.

The rocker, It's Not Over, was, of course, an instant radio hit, as was the ballad Over You. The other songs are either midtempo rockers or pandering ballads, but they lack the spiritual sensibilities of such forerunners as Creed. Otherwise, the rest of the cd is mediocre, even with Slash's help. Daughtry should listen to Day of Fire's first cd for inspiration, it being a better cd than this while along the same style.Read full review...

Daughtry CD review

Being an avid fan of American Idol, it was criminal when Chris Daughtry was eliminated. When watching AI Season 8 a few weeks back and seeing that Chris Daughtry had created his own band, aptly named Daughtry, and hearing him perform his song on AI, I instantly searched for his CD the next day.
The CD arrived from the seller in the USA 7 days later and I played it 4 times over as well as email tracks to friends and upload it to the shared computer drive at work so others could listen and enjoy. I was initially worried that BMG & 19 records (Simon Cowell's bunch) were the producers and instantly thought that this would be a tad pop like with a few cheesy tracks thrown in. I was wrong. Thank God!
For a debut album, this is a work of art. It sounds like Chris Daughtry has been doing this all his life. His voice is strong, powerful, raspy and smooth at the same time. The lyrics, compositions and melodies are great.
Being a fan of rock music in general, including Whitesnake, Journey, David Cook, Nickelback, Linkin Park, Rooster (only released 2 albums before the band split, try and get them if you can, 1st album called Rooster and 2nd album Circle and Satellites - both tremendous), Aerosmith etc, Chris Daughtry's voice sits up there with the best of them and especially track 7 'What I Want' performed with Slash from GNR is a definate 'nod yer head and tap yer feet' song. The less rockier tracks such as tracks 1, 3 and 8 and melodic with fantastic lyrics yet not soppy! Not many albums you get where you enjoy every track or flick through the tracks just to check the CD out.
Overall, I am thrilled with this album. This guy will be around for a long, long time and if you like David Cook, who I think is amazing, I'd go a step further to say that Chris Daughtry is better.
Enjoy - I did and still am!

A good album from American Idol? wow...

I'm not too much into American Idol and the singers but Daughtry definately is an exception. Although there's room to expand on lyrics and experimentation with tone color, I definately though it was a good first try. "It's Not Over", the first song and first single on the album, has become very popular on radio and is surely worth a listen. The album progress very little from there, but none of the songs are trash. Daughtry needs to develop more, but I really do like this album.Read full review...

Daughtry - Daughtry (CD)

I basically bought this CD for one song in particular, "What About Now". It's touching lyrics inspire hope when facing the loss of a relationship that means so much but the feelings are "...lost behind words we could never find...". I heard it on the radio and while the artist's voice was familiar I couln't place it. It took almost a month before I heard the DJ announce the name and then I immediately got on eBay to find it.

I've never been a Idol viewer and I couldn't tell you how many winners there have been, although I do know some of the big stars. I know Daughtry was on AI but I don't know if he won or not...no matter. After listening to the CD, I recognized about half the songs and understood why the voice was so familiar...they were all songs I liked! Songs like "It's Not Over", "Home", "Over You", and "Feels Like Tonight" were all among some of my favorites.

I wouldn't classify them as girly muzak songs. They are ballads with a solid rock beat. He has a well trained voice with a pleasing tonal quality. He's not a screamer but he has a wide range. And he has a variety of sounds-some songs are more rock than others, which are meaningful love ballads. They aren't all the same song with a slightly different tempo and words.

I don't know much about the man but I really enjoy this album. Give it a listen and I'm sure you'll find a song or three that have become 'can't get them out of my head' songs of your own. Below is the full list of songs on this great CD...

1. It's Not Over
2. Used To
3. Home
4. Over You
5. Crashed
6. Feels Like Tonight
7. What I Want - (featuring Slash)
8. Breakdown
9. Gone
10. There and Back Again
11. All These Lives
12. What About Now

Daughtry gets the last laugh - new Idol anthem is his!

Buy this if you like music from an actual artist and want to avoid the noise and bad manners others seem to think is what music should be. I wanted Chris to win American Idol just for the sake of winning - but as everyone knows, not winning that show usually ends up being the best thing that could happen to your career! Maybe sometimes America does know what it's doing when it doesn't vote for the best choice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Also, I love the group Fuel - but now I am glad Chris turned them down and stuck with his bandmates and his own vision. He has a lot of support from established artists - which you know if they are interested it's because he's worth their time and effort. These songs will fit into the soundtrack of your life and years from now you'll hear one and remember what you were doing and the emotions from when you first heard it. Keep it up Daughtry!!Read full review...

Awesome! ('Nuff said!)

What can I add that hasn't already been said? Unfortunately, I have to have a perspective of one of those who must say, "I don't know much about music, but I know what I like." And I sure do like this album. While I favored Taylor to win, I knew in my heart that Chris would be just fine. He knew exactly what he was doing on the show, and he surely knew what he was doing here. There isn't a bad song on this album, at least not to these ears. I don't have the know-how to articulate why I love this album so much. I don't know the technical terms, so I can't break it down for you. I would if I could. Everything just plain works, and presses all the right buttons. It's powerful, dynamic, edgy. I don't know. What I do know is that American music needs more singers like Chris. I have no doubt that he will go far, whatever he puts his mind to. Godspeed to him and all of Daughtry's crew.Read full review...

This Guy Is Good - Lyrically & Vocally

My husband and I watched Idol. We loved Chris, and were so sad to see him leave. But - we thought he'd make an awesome album with or without the Idol title.

We were SO RIGHT! This CD is awesome! He's got to be one of the best singers out there today. His voice doesn't disappoint, every song has something special. Our favorite is the "It's Not Over" song, but there's an acoustic version that will blow you away.

Few artists create an album by which every song is great - Daughtry did it.

This is a CD you can turn on and jam to - or use as background noise, your choice.

He's going to make more money than ANY Idol, just take a listen for yourself!

I would never buy this cd if he was not on american idol. I guess thats how people sell their albums because they get famous on tv. If I heard this cd on the radio or whatever, I would just be like thats cool. Just because I like Chris on american idol and how well he did, I bought this cd to support him. Its really a good cd. He has great songs that you can rock to. What do i know.. im more of a rap type of a guy anyways.Read full review...
