A wonderful book with a truly memorable character
Barbara Kingsolver at her best. Inspired by Dicken's novel 'David Copperfield', Kingsolver manages to create both a character and plot worthy of Dickens. She lays bare the hypocrisy of social services as seen through the eyes of Damon Field, known to everyone as Demon Copperhead. Born 'white trash' in West Virginia, Demon is an orphan who endures the indifference of child welfare workers, exploitive foster parents and drug addiction in his journey of survival.
Like Dickens, Kingsolver has a gift for challenging societal attitudes. This novel is a worthy recipient of the Pulitzer Prize.Read full review...
