The first half is pretty much a comedy, Stewart playing wimpy deputy hired to fill a dead man's shoes. The second half a real Western drama.
This is a good ol' classic from Hollywood's golden age. Two great stars, Dietrich and Jimmy Stewart. Not sure if Stewart was a full blown star already. If not, this film would have catapulted him to that status. He's very young here and never more handsome in any of his films. Dietrich was already a big star in Europe before she fled Hitler. And one of the great beauties of that era. Also cast is Mischa Auer, one of the best comic extras of that time.
Screenplay by Ben Hecht. Some may come in equal, but none can beat him. Not a stereotype Western movie, but full of subplots and character studies.

Great classic film!
I love to watch old movies & have the AFI listings in a folder so I can find movies to watch. With Roku & alot of streaming areas, usually I can find most movies. But this movie was one that was on a ton of the lists for AFI but I have never found it for free streaming. I found this dvd for about the same amount of money it took to rent it on Amazon, so I took a chance & just bought the dvd. It's a great film, highly engaging with a very young Jimmy Stewart running around with Mae West. Highly recommended!Read full review...

Excellent Jimmy Stewart western.
Great Jimmy Stewart western, not the shoot'em up type you'd expect like Winchester '73 or Naked Spur, Man from Laramie. He's Destry, son of a famous lawman, who cleans up towns with his wit and ingenuity instead of guns. He's after the town's leading saloon owner and power broker who's "stealing" ranches in backroom poker games aided by the female foil Marlene Dietrich who's a riot as "Frenchy". With the death of the sheriff, the mayor and crooked saloon owner Kent (Brian Donlevy) select their choice as worst possible lawman, the town drunk "Wash" Dimsdale to be sheriff. But "Wash" surprises everyone in Bottleneck by sending for Tom Destry and the battle of wits begins. Very entertaining western, recommend to all western fans.Read full review...

a walk back in time
brought me back in time, very entertaining. This was typical of the westerns being shot back in the early 1940s +the Villan was always shown as a sneaking conniving scoundrel & the hero was always downplayed to make him seem timid.Read full review...

Low key, lighthearted Jimmy
Lighthearted pre-WWII Jimmy Stewart at his best.(The westerns he made after WWII were a lot edgier.) He plays a laid-back deputy town marshal that hates guns. While the bad guys treat him like he's a fool tenderfoot, he's using his wits to trap them for the murder of the former town sheriff. Read full review...

A masterpiece of the Thirties.
A great movie, with a magnificent cast, which includes James Stewart and Marlene Dietrich. James Stewart gives an excellent performance as the mild mannered Deputy Sheriff who refuses to carry guns and his conversion to a gun toting law enforcer who needs to avenge the death of his friend and mentor. Marlene portraits a bawdy bar singer and an henchwoman to the town crook who later on helps Stewart and sacrifices herself for him. Her rendering of the bar-room songs are well belted out, which includes "The Boys In the Backroom" and "Little Joe".
James Stewart is one of my favourites and I have seen most of his movies and followed his career right from the 1930s till he passed away. I had seen this movies several years back on video tape and was impressed with the performance of the entire. The sets are authentic and one feels that he is transported to the wild west of 1800s.
An excellent movie, well produced and directed, I would recommend it to all to see and appreciate.Read full review...
