Great Pickups!

These pickups all all I hoped they'd be! Both pickups are very quiet.
I find the frequency response well balanced, and I had no problem balancing the power output between the P & J pickups with a little height adjustment.
The solderless connections make hookup a snap, and all wiring is shielded. Please note that the volume and tone pots are 6mm solid shaft, you may need to buy new knobs with set screws.
I was surprised the tuner is so small, but it turns out that's a plus, it even fit my headless bass. The tuner display is bright, easy to see & use, and accurate. Nice cord too.
The set I received did have a defect that was handled quickly and professionally by EMG. The solderless wiring makes part changes easy!
I highly recommend this set!

The ultimate vintage rock P tone

Extremely easy to install (solderless installation), and most importantly - fantastic sounding P pup. Nicely balanced, rounded, with the mids flavor that pretty much surpasses other pups. If you're looking for that fat barking Geezer P tone, look nowhere else, this is it. I'm currently rocking it with flats, I get everything from that aggressive old school P tone a la Black Sabbath, to Motown smoothness with the tone rolled off. Definitely my favorite P pup, with SPB1 coming in second (also great, but a different shade of great).Read full review...

Great upgrade to your P Bass!

I was disappointed in the stock passive pickups in my American Fender Precision Bass. The punch and growl that I was looking for was not there with the stock pickups despite endless tinkering with the tone and amp EQ. After reviewing and listening to several different pickup setups, I decided to give the EMG Geezer Butler passive pickups a try. I expected some of the "greatness" claimed for the pickups to be hype resulting from the Butler endorsement, but am more than happy with the sound now that the pickups are installed and have been played. With the addition of the EMG Geezer Butler pickups, there is plenty of punch and growl in my P Bass. These really woke up my precision bass.

The only negative that I found with the pickups (and this may be from my inexperience installing pickups) was the difference in depth of the EMG's vs. the stock pickups. The EMG's sit quite a bit deeper in the pickup pocket than the stock pickups. The stock pickups have foam that allows for a certain degree of resistance when setting pickup height. The EMG's did not come with foam and the stock foam would not work well as a replacement. If this is a concern, you may want to find some foam to provide the adjustment resistance that you prefer. The pickups are plug and play which is quick and easy.... that is a plus.

raw and punchy, but versatile

I've been a fanboy of EMG pickups for years, but this passive p bass is in a class by its own. It's raw and punchy, serving up a tasty growl, shimmering highs, and a tight full low end, all without running a battery. Roll off the tone to about 50%, and the volume a touch, and you start getting into a more vintage sound. String matching is easily accomplished by pickup height, although you will have to take your time to find the sweet spot on your bass. These are by far my favorite set of p bass pickups to date. Installation is a breeze with the factory standard solderless setup, and a crimping device is also added to hook up your bridge ground to the supplied bridge ground, a nice touch for passive pickups. All hardware and screws are supplied, and the instructions are for the most part easy to read. Just pay attention to the jack leads, I got confused looking at the intructions. These pickups went into a 1994 fender mim p bass, and really opened up the clarity and punch in the bass. There is a nice mid bump that sits well in a mix. All and all, I'm very happy, and will be buying a set soon in a pj format for another p bass. Don't tell the wife guitars is a great store, and always ships super fast; I normally have my purchase at my door in three days or less! Much better than 90% of the stores on eBay. If you are on the fence about trying these, hearing they are a one trick pony, that is the farthest from the truth. Do yourself a favor and try them. You will like them if you like a nice growly p bass that can be smoothed up.

Update 7/30/19

I bought my third set of these pickups from Don’t Tell the Wife Guitars on a Friday evening, and they were in my mailbox by Monday. Lightning fast delivery as always.

I use these pickups exclusively in all of my precision basses, as they are the perfect balance of tone. You can get growl or mellow depending on how you adjust the settings.

They have the perfect growl combined with a stainless steel roundwound string, very midrange forward, which sits very well in a mix. I go back and forth from fingers to pick, and they just sound great.

With another bass I use flat wound strings, and back off the tone a little. It produces a nice fat tone that is muscular, but not overbearing. A great country or blues tone.

I’ve also used them to record, where the seasoned producer was amazed at the “perfect” tone I was getting. He said he hardly had to touch the bass tone running.

I’ve included some photos of the installation on my white 70’s Fender Precision, and a shot of my black 94, backstage before a show.

I doubt I will ever be on a stage without these in a p bass. They are my secret weapon.

The reviews are no hype

I installed these in my De Armond bass after reading several glowing reviews on a bass forum, and I was not disappointed. Installation was a snap, as it was all plug in. The only minor issues were the jack and pots. The jack that comes with the kit is meant to be mounted on the pickguard of a P-bass. Since my bass has a body mounted jack, it was too short. A couple of bucks spent on a longer jack at the local music store remedied that. Also, the new pots have a larger shaft, so you can't reuse the old stock knobs, plus the shaft is smooth, requiring the use of a set screw knob. Luckily, I had a couple of knobs in my parts box that worked. Lastly, the pickups require the use of foam underneath on my bass in order to adjust the height. No problem, I used the foam that the pickups were packed in. Once it was buttoned up, the difference was night and day. Higher output, even tone all across the strings, something it didn't have before. My De Armond went from being one of my least played basses to my favorite one.Read full review...

Great pickups, highly recommend!

Replaced 30 year old active EMGs and was very happy with the tone! Were easy to install and nice to not worry about batteries, which always seemed to fail at the most inappropriate times!

Geezers

If you want the growl of an early 70s P-bass, this is it. I had a '72 P-bass that I loved back in the day and then I sold it for I needed cash badly. I thought they were all that way and could easily replace it, but I never found another that sounded like it. One of my bass students brought in a bass with these pickups installed and there it was - The Sound. These pickups are not for you if you want a clean fundamental for traditional tones and especially studio work - these pickups growl. If you want aggressive touch-responsive tone, these are the Bomb.Read full review...

Some of the best pickups out there

This is my first try with EMG's. I build and sell custom basses and have used all the other usual suspects. I have to be honest and say these pickups are really good. Plenty of output, nice deep lows, clear as a bell, and push up the mids on my amp they absolutely bark! With the included pots and solderless connections installation was breeze and a really good value. They are dead quiet. I would recommend these to anyone looking to upgrade their sound. Good job EMG!!Read full review...
