The epic saga continues...
Grab your gladius and get ready for some intense battles, because Simon Scarrow is back. When the Eagle Hunts picks up shortly after the first book of the series left off, with the invasion of Brittania (ancient Britian) by the Roman Empire. Once again, Scarrow's understanding of the way the Roman legions operated is by no means lacking. He offers fascinating descriptions of real historical battles from the viewpoint of the three main characters: a young Optio (junior officer) named Cato, the Centurion Macro, and the Second Legion's commander Vespasian. Scarrow skillfully manipulates the emotions of the reader, evoking anger at the sinister Tribune Vitellus (the book's primary villan) as he seduces young Cato's girl, jealousy towards the bumbling Emperor Claudius on the part of talanted but low-born Vespasian, and heartbreak when Macro sacrifices his life so that his century may escape a savage band of British warriors.
Be prepared to endure sleep deprivation--this one is hard to put down.Read full review...
