Slice of film history with a good bonus feature.

The remastering makes the picture look quite good, although the 16mm footage (predominantly the Mardi Gras portion) remains at a lower resolution which is to be expected. My feeling is it is appropriate that footage be a bit on the grainy side due to the nature of what is being presented. It works. I appreciated the bonus feature "Shaking the Cage" as it provided additional insight I was only vaguely aware of before viewing.

Easy Rider's place in film history is secure, but the story line itself has not aged well for me. I remember seeing the film for the first time at it's release and being moved by it. Chalk it up to being a 17 year old - or perhaps the distance from the social issues - but whatever you may attribute the change to, it no longer moves me in the way it did in 1969. In the STC feature Hopper mentions that there were no films being made that truly reflected the youth culture at the time which is somewhat true. There were certainly none that reflected the "druggy" side of the culture in a meaningful way - most were exploitative at best. Easy Rider tackles that side of the culture.

As far as if it's worth owning, perhaps for the truly committed fan. Is it worth seeing, yes, if only for getting a feel for what this film accomplished - especially when compared to the other films released at this same time.

EASY RIDER (DVD, 1999)

This was a landmark movie of the 1970's. It was the time of Flower Power, the Hippie Generation. Tattoos, choppers, weed, and free love was the talk of the nation. A whole new era in music and film was being ushered in, and a whole new crop of directors with new ideas was starting to make their mark on motion pictures. Dennis Hopper was one of those new directors and had a profound effect on this film. Wyatt (Fonda) and Billy (Hopper) are fat with drug money and on their custom chopped motorcycles, are heading across the country to "Discover America". They are heading to New Orleans, to the Mardi Gras, and the best whorehouse in the south. Riding and performing as Captain America and Billy they travel to a Hippie commune in Arizona, and are temporarily jailed in Texas until a young ACLU lawyer, Jack Nicholson, who gets them out. On to New Orleans and the Mardi Gras, only to come to a violent end at the hands of low life Red Necks. This is a cult culture film, and ushered in a whole new generation of movies like Bullit, Kojack, and Dirty Harry, and a host of Hell's Angels movies.Read full review...

The road is not so easy in mid-twentieth century America.

Released in 1969, Easy Rider still resonates in the 21st century.. Dennis Hopper, Peter Fonda and Jack Nicholson head the cast of this timely meditation on freedom and the open road.

A Biker's review of Easy Rider

Easy Rider is not a movie that would appeal to everyone. It's about freedom, and finding one's way. It's about non-conformity and expression. It's about the yoke of stereotyping, and the difference between American ideals, and what Americans actually practice.

On a large scale, it introduced the concept of cross country motorcycling. Something a lot of us take completely for granted today.

If your looking for a more 'standard' movie with a set of wholesome characters and a more standard cookie cutter plot, this movie is not it. It's not a 'family' movie. Unless, your a family of 'bikers'.

Easy Rider takes you back to an earlier, simpler time. The 1960s and 1970s. Americans we're rebelling against wars, trying to get over the horrors of WWII, and Korea and watching the ramp up the Viet Nam War. Young men and women were trying to find their way in life, and asked serious questions about what it's all about. Take that context in with this movie.

The riding scenes are still striking. The music score is still valid and powerful today. I was so inspired by the film that I've nearly completed building my own Captain America motorcycle.

Again, it's a movie that you either 'get' or can't 'get'. If your a biker, and you ride alone through the country or on distance trips with friends... you'll get it.

Love it

I of course have seen this movie previously and loved it and the music in it then. I forgot how short the movie was and how it ended. Definitely worth seeing again and again and again.
