Just another b-rate slasher movie?

In college, I was a fan of the comic series this film was based on, mostly for its incredibly detailed and over-the-top blood-and-gore art. The film adaptation is written by the same guy who penned the comics, David Quinn, so the basic premise of the comic series remains intact. This is a movie that was obviously shot on basically no budget, and the quality of the final product clearly reflects that. Bad edits, horrendous gore effects, campy acting and 1990s horror film staple "the end-of-film battle against an absurd CGI monster" all combine to make a wholly forgettable movie. The movie's got a 3.6/10 rating on IMDB and doesn't even have enough ratings to pull a ranking at Rotten Tomatoes; both are probably perfectly valid.

The movie does have some highlights. Monica Van Campen, who plays the devil's right-hand girl Claire, is pretty good and definitely looks the part from the comics; she also gets one of the movie's most insane scenes when M (Andrew Divoff) reminds her that for all her scheming, to him she's just a body to be used. Mark Frost, who plays the film's namesake taloned killer, also looks the part and does an adequate job, even though you'll spend most of the film marveling at his ridiculous facial expressions and rampant over-acting.

Read Faust LOTD instead, if you dare

You know how some books/stories are said to be unfilmable? There's a reason for that. It used to be because Thor's Hammer would never look the way Kirby drew it. Then it did. Thank you CGI! Faust LOTD was not a comic for everyone, nor should it have been a movie. You can't make something so shocking and controversial palatable for the general public. By definition, it will lose its edge. If Stuart Gordon (Reanimator, From Beyond) had been turned loose on this project with 10 times the budget and no restrictions, it could've been interesting. If you want another good example of a comic that should not be made into a movie, read Hellblazer 11 "The Newcastle Incident". It's simply too much for the usual audience. Even Keanu couldn't have made that work for Constantine 2. Too evil, just like Faust. How you gonna portray that?Read full review...
