Lets get down to brass tacks here how much for the ape?

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is a strange and fantastic trip of a movie based on the 1971 novel by the late Hunter S. Thompson. While this film is certainly not for the faint of heart and probably would not appeal in the slightest to a person who has never taken hallucinogenic drugs, or at least been intimately exposed to their use, it still has a warmth and humor to it that makes it one of my favorite films ever. Johnny Depp's portrayal of Thompson is certainly larger than life but his manerisms and animations rival the subtle genius of a Buster Keaton or Charlie Chaplin. Benicio Del Toro also turns in a legendary performance as the twisted sidekick lawyer along for the ride. Together they make this one of the best and weirdest films ever conceived and one of the finest ever adaptations of a book onto the big screen. In capturing a seemingly impossible world that resides inside the mind of Hunter S. Thompson, director Terry Gilliam has given us a masterpiece that is worthy of repeated viewing.

Starring Johhny Depp as Raoul Duke, a writer, and Benicio Del Toro as his lawyer, Dr. Gonzo, the story follows Duke and Gonzo from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. They travel to Vegas under the pretense of working on a story but instead spend most of their time struggling in a drug induced haze to maintain a basic level of functionality. They seem to alternate periods of uncontrollable intoxication while one or the other usually manages to keep just enough awareness to avoid the destruction that the other seems intent on causing. In the end they narrowly avoid disaster and end their trip heading in separate directions. The Criterion Collection edition of this movie is a 2 disc DVD with a number of special features including artwork by illustrator Ralph Steadman and a couple documentaries about Hunter S. Thompson.

Lear and Foathing in VasLegas

This is one of my favorite movies ever. It represents a great creation from the mind of Hunter S. Thompson brought to life by director Terry Gilliam. Johnny Depp plays a fantastic role as well as Benicio Del Torro. There are many small roles by some actors/actresses that we know very well today (Cameron Diaz, Toby McGuire, Christina Ricci). This movie is about the end of an era as seen through the eyes (for real and some hallucination) of a journalist and his attourny on a long drug binge in Las Vegas. I highly recomend buying or at least renting this film.Read full review...

Movie will take you on a trip

I love this movie. It is the new version of Easy Rider. Johnny Depp puts on yet another stellar performance alongside Benico Del Toro's phenomenal character acting as well. These two together should have won an academy award if it weren't for the less than main stream subject matter. You won't watch this movie and leave with the desire to do drugs either. Just the opposite but the trip is still funny and very entertaining. Both Depp and Del Toro get lost in the characters and you find it very easy to forget they are actually actors and not the real persons they are portraying. Keep in mind this is basically a true story of Gonzo Journalism. Well worth watching and adding to your collection right next to Pink Floyd's The Wall, Rocky Horror Picture Show, and Across the Universe to name a few. An interesting fact is the whole script was rewritten and corrections made all in just eight days due to an artistic conflict with the original screenplay writer. Not bad I'd say for a toss together. Says something for the director and the writers. This is not just an art film but a statement for a generation due to be a cult classic if not already.Read full review...

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas Criterion Collection DVD

I only recently discovered of this american classic about drug use and the "american way" in a way youve never seen. When i fist saw this i could barely understand it now i wish i could live by it. The dvd itself(picture) looks very nice, slightly touched up and sharper than the original dvd version in my opinion. The extras dvd is my favorite feature besides the movie itself which has a documentary style short movie about Hunter thompson himself the star of FEAR AND LOATHING. It really lets you see how well they captured his attitude and way of life. Overall a good movie to watch for most people who are not afraid of a little drug use in their movies. Lets you see one of the many sides of american freedomRead full review...

This is my all time favorite johnny depp movie!!!

I am a huge fan of johnny depp and have seen all of his movies. This one stands out because he plays such an odd character and noone could ever attempt to play the character quite like he does it. If you like drug and stoner movies HERE IT IS!!! he plays a wacked out drug addict Magazine reporter who takes his drug addicted lawyer to vegas for a few days to cover a motorcycle race (dont worry there is only like 15 minutes of racing in the whole movie and it is really funny) they went to vegas for the race but they were too high and drunk to do the job so the whole movie is one crazy drug induced adventure. They special effects are so good it will make you think you are on something just watching it.... If you like to party, like johnny depp, like comedies with drug induced scenes, or are have a thing for weird movies THIS IS THE ONE FOR YOU- 420Read full review...

A great book to movie a must own

Depp's acting in this movie was beyond great and he should have a oscar for his role. This movie almost follows the book word for word and that is rare.
Hunter makes a cameo in this movie and the red car is hunter's. Depp lived with thompson before shooting this film to get a feel for the real hunter s. He was hunter in this film. If you have not seen this movie go out and buy it you will not be dissapointed.Read full review...

A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream

Hunter S. Thompson, in my opinion, is one of the defining writers of the twentieth and twenty first centuries. the book that this movie is based on, "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas", is my favorite book of all time. Thompson captures the atmosphere of an acid trip and other psychedelic drugs as well as the insanity of trying to behave under such strong influences. The book describes the true nature of what Americans consider a decent society. The director, Terry Gilliam, along with a cast of actors that include Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro, successfully captures the essence of the book. A true journey through the minds of the twisted, ripped, stoned and as Raoul Duke refers to him and his attorney, "Good People".Read full review...

Genious!

This is my favorite movie of all time! Terry Gilliam did an amazing job recreating Hunter S. Thompson's book. Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro who portray the infamous Raul Duke and Dr. Gonzo completely lose themselves in thier characters which makes this movie even funner and intense! The criterion collection included some extra features, like the making of, behind the scenes, ect..and for a huge fan like myself who already had the original movie on DVD...it was worth the $$ to have this one too!Read full review...
