Good.

Overall, this is a great novel. The story follows Charlie Gordon, a severly mentally handicapped man who has an unsaisable appetite for learning. Charlie attends a center for adult learning in hopes that he'll become smart, until he becomes part of an experimental operation that leaves him with an ever-increasing I.Q.. With his hunger for knowledge intact, and an increasing desire for human relations, he quickly realizes that being a genius is sometimes harder than naivity.
The only reason this book received a 4 star rating was due to its lack to describe past events consistantly and effectively. The book depends on important memories, however it is sometimes difficult to know when a flashback begins or ends.

Basic story is there but...

The story does not compare to the 1968 release("Charly" with Cliff Robertson). The story is like a synopsis of the original release in that it glosses over a lot of the things which were essential for the main character's development. ("Charly Gordan"). Certain parts were omitted from this release such as Charley's experiences when he went out into the "real world." The basic story line and plot are there, but the new release fails to develop the main character fully, and disappointingly chops out sections of the story. If however, you never saw the original 1968 release, you won't notice the difference. Read full review...

I wouldn't have bought this one on my own initiative!

My grandson asked me to order this 'cause he'd read it in a class. I was not looking forward to seeing it, not my type of movie. I managed to get all the way through it & did enjoy it altho' I'd wished it had moved along a little bit faster! As a nurse, I'd have liked to have had an update at the end, or epilogue if you will, so I could have learned his ultimate fate. If you like sentimental movies, this one is fine.Read full review...

Flowers For Algernon

I read the book when I was A Young teen(book report).
I saw the play performed live on stage as an older teen.
And now to have this wonderful story of a mentally challenged
young man go through the stages of being happy not knowing(dumb),
having an operation to make him smart and the challenges he faces
and how people change around him,and let's not forget Algernon...
Sad but uplifting, heart felt story. It's a love story of sort.
This is a must have movie!!

good nobel into movie

the novel expansion of Flowers for Algernon, which won the Nebula Award in 1966 on a movie. This is one of the classics of science fiction, and has even sparked a fair amount of mainstream attention, so many people are already familiar with the basic plot. A mentally retarded man is the subject of a scientific experiment to increase his mental capacity and becomes a genius.Read full review...
