I Love this Film!

Technically speaking, I'm probably way over rating this movie. It does fall short on a few aspects such as direction and filmography. However, having said that, this is one of the most delightful stories that no one has ever heard. Although, neither of us went abroad during college, my wife and I (who have been together since college having attended it at about the same time in which the movie takes place) fell in love with this story about college students and their year abroad in Paris. In fact, as our son is about to leave for a semester in France, we have made this required viewing for him before he leaves.

Produced by the makers of American Graffitti, this is a coming of age film about the experiences of four college students who are studying abroad for a year in Paris. It is a light-hearted film that moves very quickly yet for a movie that is only about 90 minutes alot happens. Debra Winger and Mandy Patinkin are featured in this movie but surprisingly play more minor roles. The primary characters are played by lesser known actors Miles Chapin, David Marshall Grant, and Blanche Baker. The character develop is done very well and each actor does a very good job in this regard. We see how the different episodes that they all encounter serve to help them grow as individuals during their year. The film climaxes with an attempted triste between Alex (David Marshall Grant) and the head mistress of the Institute for French Studies Madame Tessier (Marie-France Pisier) that is thwarted by her husband Monsieur Tessier (Jean Roquefort) despite the efforts of Joel (Miles Chapin) who does what he can to protect his roomate. Chapin has the opportunity to display his exceptional talents of comedic timing as Joel desperately tries to delay M. Tessier's return to his home after a canceled flight to Switzerland. Here we see a wonderful performance and it leads one to wonder why Chapin has not been seen in more prominent roles in Hollywood.

If you went to college in the late 70s or early 80s you will truly enjoy this movie.

FUN TO WATCH!

You need to remember it was made in 1979, but is fun to watch.

Blah!

I adore Valerie Quenessin and want to see everything she was in. Not worth the effort. She was much better in Summer Lovers.
