If you weren't there when the whole GPS concept starts, just pass this unit
The strength of the Garmin GPS 45 unit is the large Passive LCD. which makes all the difference in day navigation under sunlight. I use my unit when I'm out in the sea. the display is very clear with much less energy than the active color LCD in the market now a day. In night it has a low intensity back light which is more than enough to keep navigating without drawing much power.
another advantage for this GPS is that it works on AA batteries which almost available everywhere for around 25 hours. therefore I don't have to worry about charging it in advance if I'm in hurry or just forgot to do so.
The unit is water-resistance not water-proof it can handle splashes and spills but not submerge.
regarding the disadvantages, This unit has only 8 channels so its accuracy is not that good but it doesn't make that much of a difference in the sea. No detailed maps. Entering the way point is not easy using the unit, better to be done via data cable. Date is not correct due to Y2K issue.Read full review...
Good Basic GPS for Marine application
A Good basic GPS for marine use if you don't need a built in map. This is the second Garmin 45 I have owned. I used the first one for many years and it really did the job for me. I bought this one as an inexpensive backup for a much more expensive unit. If you use it with any PC map program that shows L & L coordinates, you can print a map and input waypoints in your living room before embarking on your trip. One time I was planning a fishing trip to Lake Fork, Tx. I had never been there and it is a very large lake with many fingers and inlets. I live in south Louisiana. I input and named waypoints for all the points and cuts and other features of the lake. I always knew where I was and could go where ever I wanted to go. Its worth the money if you use it just to follow your track to get back to the launch. I purchased another in-expensive hand held a few years ago and did not like it because it had a delayed action. When you changed directions it took a few seconds for the unit to show the change in direction. This unit is not like that. Changes in direction are shown immediately.Read full review...
Good for marine use
I previously had this same unit, but it recently failed to turn on. I was familiar with this unit so a logical choice for replacing. I use this unit for marine use and it operates like new. It is a older unit by very well built. I left the "reliable" box blank because I do not know how long it will perform. That said, the same unit, it is replacing, lasted for close to 10 years. It is slower, than newer models, to access satellites but once locked on it works well.Read full review...

Garmin 45 GPS
This is our second Garmin 45 GPS, plus we have a (non45) Garmin GPS in our car. We have had excellent performance from our first 45 which we installed on our boat in 1994. It still works well too; the only problem is that the screen has fogged and is unreadable. We still link it to our radar and it gives accurate information - all this after almost 20 years of use on a sailboat in tropical locations, and, even 2 years of storage on-the-hard in a Mexican desert.Read full review...

Good for inland boating; speed, direction, distance to stored way points.
This is ancient technology compared to todays gps units. The garmin 45 was one of the very earliest handheld marine gps units for boaters. You can get accurate speed, nautical or statute, exact location and direction, time and distance from a way point for present course.
The unit will store multiple route with as many way points as you'd ever need.Read full review...
