Accurate, fast fix, WATERPROOF

I am a kayaker. I love the 64st! I use it with a Bluechart G2 card. The 100K TOPO basemap is perfect for identifying terrain from the water

This Garmin GPS is a more mature successor to the GPSMAP 60CSX, which I've owned for years. It maintains the same great shape and feel - fits perfectly in the hand - and attaches easily to my kayak. I have "dunked" my phone once when launching my kayak, so I stopped using it for gps. My phone now goes into a waterproof bag, for use in emergency and the Garmin is my perfect navigator.

If I keep my iPhone turned on, I can automatically send my position (at intervals) via Garmin's iOS app, GPS Connect, to family, friends. If necessary they could find me in an emergency on solo kayak trips - as long as the phone is within cell phone range.

With a subscription, (~$30/yr) free for the first year, Birdseye feature allows you to download satellite imagery - similar to google maps - to see your position on actual overhead photo. Once you d/l the image it remains yours even if your subscription expires. Image quality can be set to high, excellent quality.

GLASNOSS plus GPS reception is automatic, improving both signal acquisition time (for sure) and reliability (maybe).

It also has a few other bells and whistles which I currently don't use... Geo-caching features, heart rate monitor, cadence monitor, temp monitor, iphone notifications etc. Although it doesn't have a touchscreen and the control interface is a bit "dated", I'm still a VERY HAPPY paddler!!

A lesson in patience and perseverance.

I have been using various GPS units for several years in my automobiles so I am quite familiar with their operation but by no means an expert.
I decided to purchase this Garmin GPSMAP64st to mount on my Harley Davidson. I chose this model based primarily on its size since space is at a premium. I have no complaints with unit itself, however reliable documentation is non-existent. If it weren't for Youtube I would be struggling with its setup for years. It is loaded with features and some are difficult and confusing to access.
Garmin needs to up its game and produce a reliable user manual to send out with these units. This could quite easily have been a Five Star review with adequate documentation.

Good GPS for Dual Sport Motorcycle Riders

I use it for Dual Sport motorcycle riding. You can download a track from several popular .GPX file exchange websites and use this GPS to follow some very fun routes! I ride an XR 650L and this fits well on the crossbar with a bicycle mount. Of course you can create and upload your routes with this GPS also. Big enough to see the display well, small enough to work on a motorcycle. And unlike a smartphone, this is weatherproof, is easy to see in sunlight, and because it has buttons you can use it with gloves on. Good topo maps on the GPS too, but doesn't really do turn by turn type navigation for street bike / highway riding as far as I can tell if that is what you are looking for. Read full review...

You can't go wrong with a Garmin

This is my 4th Garmin GPS. I had a GPS 60. and two GPS 76's before this and the 64 is definitely an improvement. You can still use your old TOPO maps and tracks as well as download newer more detailed maps. It boots up without all the "searching for satellites" and it so far has not lost reception, which was an issue with all my other models when you would get up in the mountains or a deep river valley. I have also had other brands in the past and they were never as durable or reliable. Garmin support for updates is also second to none. Buy with confidence. Read full review...

Garmin Maps 64ST is a great little unit

I have had several Garmins in the past. The 64ST is the best i have owned so far. It is simpler to use than the old GPS 12 I still have. The color screen is a big plus.I upgraded to the 24K topo and also added city navigator and having the ability to choose between the 2 maps is like having multiple GPS in your hand. Leave the 24K turned on coupled with the city navigator map adds more detail to the background and really shows well. If its hiking or riding you want a GPS for you will not be disappointed with the 64ST. Spend the time and down load the birds eye view and it is like having google earth in the palm of your hand. Garmin makes the most user friendly handhelds on the market.

Great features, easy to operate, intuitive menu options. Reasonable battery life. Clear screen. Happy repeat customer, replaced my previous model ( 60 CSx) due to loss, after nearly ten years of constant use.Read full review...

Excellent GPS

I haven't had the time to take it for a long ride yet, this Spring. So far on rides around fifty miles or shorter, it is very accurate. It acquires satellites and maps my routes, faster than my Garmin Oregon, much faster. It is easy to read the screen and the buttons are just responsive enough, that I don't have to back track on the screens, because of the bikes vibrations, causing me to hit them more than once. I'm not comfortable with the NiMH battery but I'll see how a set of LiPo batteries and a solar charger does, it should extend the run time, for long rides.
What with the maps, accuracy and speed of the unit, I'm well pleased.

Still evaluating this unit

I've been playing with this unit for a couple of days now and I sure like the features that it has to offer.

I have run into a couple of glitches such as "There are no navigable roads in this area" when I know there are navigable roads in the area as I try to navigate to a waypoint.

I have done a reset and I think it may have solved the problem.

If it is a recurring problem I will take the issue up with Garmin since the unit is under warranty.

Overall, I am impressed with the amount of features available in a hand held GPS from Garmin today since I have been using a Garmin GPS 12XL for the last twenty years which still works like it did when I bought it and I still use it regularly in a marine application.

I like it!

Very good GPS. I spent close to $100 under Garmin's list price, and used the savings to add a 24k Topo map of my region and a rechargable battery pack. The map came on a mini SD card and works perfectly. Much easier to use and update than any previous GPS unit I've had. My Magllen's are history!Read full review...

Great upgrade

This is my 3rd Garmin product and by far the best. It reads signals quickly and easily in heavily forested mountain areas. The larger size is still easy to carry, the features are seamless and easy to follow.Read full review...
