Garmin nuvi 1390LMT - a really good GPS

Garmin makes excellent GPS units. They all do pretty much the same thing but this one stands out for two reasons:

1) Lifetime maps. You never have to pay to get the latest version of the maps. Forever. Great deal.

2) This GPS actually shows you the highway signs you will be encountering in the next segment of your trip. It is weird but very useful to see a schematic of the same sign you are seeing in real life but this assists you in knowing which road to take or even if you are on the right road.

Plus, on eBay these GPS units are really cheap!

I know everyone has a GPS on their phone but without a phone you are stuck. I like having a unit devoted only to one thing that can operate separate from my phone.

Garmin nuvi 1390LMT Automotive GPS Receiver

Likes,
easy to read screen, Free Lifetime Maps and Traffic, good sensitivity of touch screen, compact design, easy updating on Garmin Website, the picture viewer.
Dislikes,

The window suction mount is hard to grasp with the GPS attached, the thick reciever that is built into the power cord that is used for traffic updates, the speakers sound is lousy, hard to understand what it is saying (cheap speaker), lack of Bluetooth technology that can connect to the car audio system to bypass the cheap speaker in the GPS unit, lack of being able to input phone numbers under favorites, cannot find POI for any city other than the city you are currently in.

Unit appears to be built sturdy enough, I still like it despite all of the dislikes, I give it 3.5 out of 5 score.

Great GPS, Great Seller

After the 1390LMT was lost in shipment the seller offered a 1350LMT, from what I can tell the only difference is the lack of Bluetooth; no problem as I likely would not have used this feature. So, the Garmin Nuvi 1350LMT is what I received.

I have been a Garmin GPS owner for some time and wanted to upgrade my 350 Nuvi with a better map set. When I started looking at the options, it seemed like the best deal would be to replace my old unit with a newer one that included Lifetime Maps. Having used the 1350 on a recent road trip, I am favorable impressed with its performance and many features that my old unit lacked. I especially like the lane assist. And, while I have yet to try it out, I think the pedestrian feature will be an asset when visiting new cities and using public transportation.

Top of Line gps device !!

To those people who don't use separate gps units since there smartphone has it installed just remember your phone is using google maps which are great but what happens when you don't get cell service in those mountain areas or low areas where signal just drops ,these units use satellite which for the most part I always keep mine handy just for the signal reason since I travel a lot plus this unit gives you free lifetime maps which is what ltm stands for just register with Garmin plug into pc and update when it needs to also use at least an 8gb or larger sd chip for maximum space for maps updates pictures etc .Plus this unit is Bluetooth which you can sync your cellphone with overall excellent unit !!Read full review...

Garmin Nuvi 1390LMT is a great GPS.

This is an excellent GPS. Very easy to use right out of the box. Has a lot of great features. The lifetime Traffic and Maps is definitely worth it. I already own a Magellan GPS, but no lifetime traffic or maps. Was time to upgrade and I wanted to try Garmin. Glad I made the purchase. There are a few differences between the two. The Magellan beeps when you come upon a turn. The Garmin doesn't have this feature. Garmin has ability to change your vehicle (Garmin Garage). Magellan only has the arrow. I am having a lot of fun with the Garmin. If you are thinking about buying this GPS, don't hesitate you won't regret it. I haven't had any problems so far. I have had it for almost a month. I have used it local as well as long distance.Read full review...

Not very good.

Unfortunately I am not super happy with this purchase. Aside from the complicated map updating (needed customer support and they instructed me to use the "unrecommended download option"), the navigator does not recognize my address or certain local roads in my area. It suggests I make incorrect turns and in one case took me around in circles 4 times till I decided it was not doing what my simple MetroPCS phone navigator could do. My phone navigator was perfect compared to this supposedly updated top notch machine. I have not taken this navigator on any long trips as of yet, just used it locally and it has failed miserably. I would have gone with something cheaper or even kept paying my 5 dollar monthly fee for my phone navigation service if I knew how horrible this navigator was. Look into this carefully before purchasing.Read full review...

The best GPS I have ever owned.

This unit is so much nicer and easier to use than the Tom-Tom units. It also seems to be ready much faster to use than the older Garmin I have. One neat feature was using my computer to move my favorites from the older unit to the new one by replacing the current.gpx file. I also could not find some of the British and Australian voices that I like on the web site, so I copied them over also. The lane assist is a neat feature to have also. Last night coming home it did not want to take me the way I normally go, however I decided to go my way anyhow. Once I got on the highway it told me there might be delays. It was thankfully on the other side of the interstate, but it showed me the traffic update did indeed work also. It did take 4 hours to upgrade the maps over night by using the internet, however never having to pay for them and upgrading them every 3 months if I want is the only way to go.Read full review...

Great product and great value.

I loved my old Garmin GPS, but the maps were outdated and not updateable. This GPS can be updated via a USB connector on my PC for a life time. The screen is large enough to be easily seen while driving and the voice prompts are clear and easily understood. It is much more accurate than my old unit and always tells me to turn well in advance and tells me the street name to turn on. I like the points of interest feature as it pulls up all the sites asked for and gives not only the address but also the phone numbers. For instance if you want food, it will have a menu of types of food you want. I would recommend this GPS to anyone looking for an economical GPS with most of the features you would ever need.Read full review...

Great little back-seat driver!

Good little friend to have along on a trip. The ONLY thing that bugs me about this little outfit is that every once-in-a-while it will just STOP working...and then we have a dickens-of-a-time in getting it to come back on!!!

All the features of this GPS are great; I do wish the voice wasn't quite so electronic sounding (our first Nuvi sounded more "real"), however the trade off is that she actually tells us the name of the street/road on which to turn! This means we don't have to actually LOOK at the screen to find the name of the road. I LOVE that feature!

Maybe it can do it and we just haven't figured it out yet, but we do miss the "topographical" lines our early Garmin/Nuvi had...we are both cartographic fiends, so we miss seeing those family hilly-lines.

Otherwise, great little back-seat driver!!!
