The Re-Enactors (And Jeff Daniels) Carry This One.

When this came out, there was a lot of excitement. After all, Gettysburg was the pivotal battle of the American Civil War, a bloody three-day toe-to-toe battle that saw the end of the Southern army's move north. I quickly came to be disappointed with much of the casting. It seems to me that the Confederate generals (Lee, Longstreet, Stewart) were made to look somewhat ridiculous. Martin Sheen as General Lee fell short of the mark, and the fact that they mounted him on a lame horse annoyed me no end. As a horsewoman, I also found his incessant bouncing up and down in the saddle as he spoke extremely annoying. His subordinate offcers with equally unconvincing southern accents and fake beards were just plain silly. Better efforts were made in casting the Union officers, and casting Jeff Daniels was genius. His portrayal of Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain was so believable, it seemed he had been reincarnated before our eyes.

Much of the film seems to drag, and only when we get to the battle scenes does it get "good", in my words. The Battle of Little Round Top, Pickett's Charge, the opening salvos the first day of Gettysburg were riveting. Hundreds of re-enactors showed up to participate in the filming, and in my opinion, they carried the movie. In my opinion, these scenes made the movie. They were exceptionally well done and realistic.

I would watch the battle scenes without hesitation. Most of the rest is simply filler. There is a lot of historical fact included in the scripting, but one must remember that this was based on the book "Killer Angels", and therefore, some aspects of this movie are purely fictional.

Great depiction of one of the most important battles in American history.

An excellent movie depicting the historical events of the Gettysburg battles. The great all-star cast do a magnificent job of bringing all the historical characters to life. The figures in the battle are depicted as real human beings rather than historical figures that one sees in history books. The actors actually become the important leaders in the battle on both sides. This is also true for the minor figures in the battle. This movie gives a clear understanding of this pivotal battle in American history. We see the struggles and sacrifices made by the men who fought this important battle.Read full review

Very Good Movie

Reenactment scenes are outstanding and characters are well portrayed. Historical accuracy seems to be in line with actual events. There seems to be, in my opinion, a rather weak attempt to validate each side's justification for the conflict and some annoying patriotic dialogue, but all in all I found the DVD to be well worth the price and very interesting to watch. Glad I bought it.Read full review

The only thing left saying about GETTYSBURG is see it.

Well done presentation and a clean story line focusing on a crucial time of major impact in the lives and times of America and it's imperfect history which cost so much loss and death and misery. As a history lesson it is highly accurate as portrayed by an excellent cast of actors.

Product clean, viewable and well packaged. Fast transit time. All good.

A good characterization of Civil War at Gettysburg & its military leaders

Actors are believable in character. Major General George Pickett was not as "wild crazy" as he was portrayed in the movie. Other than this disappointment, the movie seems to be relatively true to the actual military strategies leading up to, and at, Gettysburg. It appears to capture the personality of the key military leaders on both sides of the Civil War.Read full review

Northern propoganda movie.

This would have been a great movie without the revisionist nonsense. The director made sure to portray the southern soldiers as uneducated bumpkins. The movie is filmed primarily from the union view point.Read full review

I love it!

I really like anything historical, and the Civil War era has always fascinated me.
Great cinematography too.
***I remember being with my parents, driving through Pennsylvania in 1963.
We were near Gettysburg.
Mom and I wanted to stop and see the battlefield.
But Dad wouldn't stop, saying "It's just an old field."
No it is not!
And it never will be!
I apologize for straying off topic.....
