Heavy reading.
Great series of books, but very technical. You will learn the way it was in Britain's Navy "back then". You will learn the differences between mid-shipmen, lieutenants, master and commanders, post captain, captain and the many types of Admirals. You will be put in many sea battles.
Unless you are into sailing in the early 1800s you will need the companion books; (1) "A Sea of Words" a lexicon and companion for Patrick O'Brian's books and (2) "Men of War", Life in Nelson's Navy. Both of these books describe the system of officer's ranks, ships, weaponry, sails, sailing techniques, traditions and the Naval vernacular is use at that time.Read full review...
